Artres offers two distinct ways to explore: the Artresian Loop between Artres and Famars, and architectural and film history at specific sites. For overnight stays, Le Moulin d’Artres is a locally connected accommodation option.
The Artresian Loop: 7 km between Artres and Famars
The Artresian Loop is a 7 km circular trail between Artres and Famars. It follows paved roads and paths, between pastures, wooded areas and the river. The Rhônelle is the guiding river along the walk. The route also runs alongside the Étang des Sources and then through fields. The loop thus combines paved sections, pastures and wooded areas with a river, a pond and fields. The distance provides a clear framework for planning; at the same time, the changing landscape is part of the trail’s character. If you want to get to know Artres on foot, you can focus on the scenery along the loop and consider the historic buildings as a different way to explore the town. Trail conditions and access information may change. Check them before setting out, especially if you are planning your day around the route.
Buildings, grotto and film history
The Church of Saint-Martin houses a miniature replica of the Grotto of Lourdes. The Lourdes grotto at the church was built in 1885. A small chapel below the church was built for the filming of “Germinal.” Claude Berri filmed several scenes for the movie in Artres between autumn 1992 and winter 1993. The grotto and the film history thus mark different points in time: filming took place more than a century after the grotto was built, and the chapel provides the architectural connection to “Germinal.”
La cense du Château and the Chapelle du Tapage also offer tangible points of reference for local history. La cense du Château in Artres has feudal origins; its gateway is topped by a remarkable dovecote dating from 1747. The year 1648 is still visible at the base of the Chapelle du Tapage. Together with the grotto dating from 1885, these form a timeline of different buildings and architectural details. This distinction can help you choose a theme: the Chapelle du Tapage has a dated base, La cense du Château has a gateway with a dovecote and feudal origins, and Saint-Martin combines a grotto with the film connection to “Germinal.”
