Verdalle brings together a château, a botanical garden and a setting between the plains and uplands. The town lies at the northern foot of the Montagne Noire, in the south of the Tarn department, and is part of the Haut-Languedoc Regional Natural Park. This gives you two distinct areas to focus on when planning your trip: architecture and garden visits on the one hand, and landscapes and routes on the other. You can decide which aspect to prioritise based on the specific places and activities that interest you.

Woodland and elevation

The Forêt d’Hautaniboul, a former royal forest, covers Verdalle’s southern edge; its highest point is at 812 metres. This gives a specific point of reference for elevation alongside the town’s location at the northern foot of the Montagne Noire, between the plains and uplands. The woodland edge is another element of the landscape, alongside the plains and foothills. Those wishing to include nature and landscapes in their trip will find more than one type of terrain to explore here.

Château and Jardins de l’Ange

The Château de Verdalle was built in the early 17th century. Its rectangular main building is flanked by two square towers. Les Jardins de l’Ange, a botanical garden that has welcomed visitors since 2023, surround the château. Across almost three hectares, 23 individually designed themed gardens are laid out; the garden holds the French “Jardin remarquable” designation. The château’s architecture and the garden’s themed variety offer distinct points of interest.

In 2026, the Jardins de l’Ange are open from 5 April to 30 November; check the exact opening days before your visit. A picnic area can accommodate up to 50 people. Events, conferences and workshops take place there throughout the year, including the Fête de la Rose in May.

The ponds and small marsh at the château attract frogs, dragonflies, water snakes, lizards and salamanders. Alongside the landscaped garden areas, these bodies of water and their range of animal species are another focus.

Art and other cultural sites

The outdoor grounds of the Atelier du Bois-Vieil are open to visitors. Sculptures, drawings and paintings are displayed in the park, including works by Josée Catalo. Sculpture workshops are also held at the Atelier du Bois-Vieil in Verdalle. Check workshop availability and opening arrangements before your trip.

The Château de Verdalle is also home to the Bien-être à Colomblanche centre. It offers meditation, workshops and conferences. Check participation options and dates in advance if you would like to plan for one of these activities.

Verdalle’s church dates from the 14th century and has an octagonal bell tower. At the upper end of the Castrum de Contrast stands a castle tower; the site also includes a section of an old road about 50 metres long. These details add further historic architectural features to the château, though they do not form part of a single walking route.

Walking and cycling

The GR7 hiking trail is marked in Verdalle. The C21 cycling loop, “A l’abri du vent d’Autan,” is 68 kilometres long and runs between the Castres plain and the Montagne Noire. This offers two distinct options: a hiking trail and a cycling loop with a specified distance. Check the latest route information for the C21 before setting out.
