Valence-d'Albigeois brings together specific market days, a rich architectural history and the natural features of the Haute Vallée du Cérou. When choosing a holiday rental, it helps to consider what you want to focus on during your stay: a morning at the market, the art and history of the churches and squares, or the landscape and its documented habitats. These themes offer different ways to experience the place, without requiring a fixed daily itinerary.

Weekly markets on three mornings

A market is held at Place de l’Eglise on Sunday mornings. Combes Primeur and Les Saveurs du Puy Saint Georges, a butcher and charcuterie seller, offer their goods there. On Tuesday mornings, a market takes place at Place du Foirail, with Puech Primeur, La fromagerie du Levezou (Roques), a cheese seller, and La ferme de Vers (Ramamouneau), a butcher and charcuterie seller. On Thursday mornings, a market featuring Boucherie Resseguier is held at the same square.

The three market mornings are spread across two squares and feature different vendors. If you plan to visit a market, choose the appropriate day of the week. As vendors and dates may change, check the latest market information before travelling.

Landscape and birdlife

The ZNIEFF Haute Vallée du Cérou also includes the commune of Valence-d'Albigeois. The landscape features described there include wooded slopes in deeply cut valleys, rocky outcrops, small rock faces and dry heathland. The natural environment thus encompasses several clearly identified habitats, rather than just a general landscape setting.

An INPN survey dated 12 June 2024 recorded eleven breeding birds of prey in the ZNIEFF. Four of these species are rare or very rare in the Tarn: the Short-toed Snake Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, Montagu's Harrier and Eurasian Eagle-Owl. The habitat information describes the landscape; the dated survey adds a snapshot of the breeding birds at a specific point in time.

Lac de Ginestous is also among the named destinations in the commune, which lists it among its sports facilities.

Church, arcades and chapel history

Notre-Dame de l’Assomption dates from the 16th century and has undergone extensive alterations. The bright nave is illuminated by 18 stained-glass windows by master glassmaker François Soleille. The church also houses a 17th-century Pietà, made of polychrome wood with metal fittings. The building's history, stained glass and sculpture offer different perspectives on the church, from its origins to individual works of art.

Place du Coq has preserved two stone arcades dating from its origins. A 2017 description calls them the only remaining testimony to the historic past of the bastide of Valence-d'Albigeois. The arcades thus provide a distinct historical feature alongside the church's architecture and artworks.

A chapel in Valence-d'Albigeois was built in 1880 under the direction of Bishop Etienne Ramadié. Its interior has been listed in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments since 1985. A 2012 report describes restoration work on a chapel in the commune: Jacques Viard restored ten wall paintings and restored or completely remade 15 stained-glass windows.

During your stay, the weekly markets offer a calendar-based focus, while the church, chapel and arcades reveal historical and artistic details spanning several centuries. The landscape information combines named habitats with a dated nature survey. These differences can help you decide which focus best suits your trip.
