Tonnac brings together two distinct visitor interests: the Sentier de Maraval through the red dunes of the Rougier de Maraval and Saint-Pierre Church above the old stone houses. The trail then reaches the village; at Saint-Pierre, art and architectural history take center stage. This makes it easy to choose what should shape your stay: hiking or the village’s historical landmarks? Both interests have specific points of connection, from the marked circular route to the paintings and architectural features of the church.

Hiking through the red dunes

The Sentier de Maraval is a moderately difficult, 8.6-kilometer circular route with PR trail markings and the FFRandonnée® quality label. It passes through the red dunes of the Rougier de Maraval and then reaches Tonnac. Its circular format, length and difficulty rating provide a concrete basis for planning your hike. Route details may change; check the latest information before setting out.

The geology and nature of the Rougier

The landscape owes its shape to a much older geological history: the red dunes of the Rougier de Maraval formed more than 250 million years ago in a tropical climate. Eroded argillites have formed ravines and rounded hills there. For anyone interested in how the terrain was formed, this outing offers not just a hiking route but also a landscape shaped by rock and erosion.

The area also has an ecological dimension: the Tarn Department has designated the red dunes as an Espace Naturel Sensible (Sensitive Natural Area). The animals and plants there are adapted to nutrient-poor, fragile soils. Landforms and living conditions are thus two different aspects of the same landscape. For travelers choosing a destination with an interest in nature as well as hiking, the Rougier offers tangible points of interest in both its visible ravines and hills and its distinctive soil conditions.

Starting points and getting there

You can start the Sentier de Maraval either at the parking lot next to Tonnac cemetery or at Cordes-Vindrac station. The station is served by the liO train on the Toulouse–Villefranche-de-Rouergue route and by liO bus route 707 between Albi and Cordes. If you choose the station as your starting point, check the current timetables in advance. Also check the latest information about the parking lot and trail access before your visit. This will help you plan the start of your hike around your travel arrangements.

Saint-Pierre and the history of the village

Saint-Pierre Church overlooks Tonnac’s old stone houses, most of which have been renovated. The church contains three paintings by Bénézet, a painter from Toulouse. Its architecture includes two side chapels, which may have been added later. A former castle was attached to the church and is now in ruins. The church’s position above the houses and its connection to the former castle provide a setting for its architectural history; the paintings and chapels add to the picture of the church itself.

The landscape and the history of the village are therefore distinct reasons to include Tonnac in your travel plans.
