Tanus offers several reasons to visit: three walking or trail routes around the Pont de Tanus, the Viaduc du Viaur, and various cultural and traditional craft themes. The Foire du Ségala, held in Tanus since 1970, is another attraction. When planning, you can treat outdoor activities, construction history and the event as distinct areas of interest.

Walking, the Viaur and steel construction

Around the Pont de Tanus, the Boucles du Ségala offer three walking or trail routes ranging from 7 to 9 kilometres. This range gives you a clear distance framework for planning. Route options may change from one edition to another, so before making specific plans, check which routes are planned for the relevant edition.

The Viaduc du Viaur is accessible from Tanus. It is a railway bridge and a major steel structure. Engineer Paul Bodin designed the viaduct, which was built between 1895 and 1902. The combination of its design, construction period and steel construction makes the viaduct a distinct point of interest in the history of technology.

Within the “Vallées du Tarn, de l’Aveyron, du Viaur, de l’Agout et du Gijou” Natura 2000 protected area, 14 hectares of the Viaur River lie within Tanus.

Cultural heritage and village crafts

The Chapelle de Las Planques was built between the 11th and 12th centuries and features 16th-century frescoes. Its construction period and frescoes therefore point to different historical periods; at the chapel, you can see an older building alongside later pictorial decoration. The Église Saint-Salvy des Fournials is another sight in Tanus.

La Cabano showcases the techniques and tools used in traditional village trades, including shoemaking, baking, hairdressing and tailoring. Alongside the trades, the focus also includes their associated tools and techniques. This gives you two different ways to explore history: the chapel and church are presented as buildings, while La Cabano draws attention to traditional crafts and how they were practised.

Near Tanus, the La Chapelle des Planques walk leads to the ruins of the Château de Vieux Tanus. This distinguishes it from the Boucles du Ségala: there, you can choose among three routes ranging from 7 to 9 kilometres; here, the castle ruins are the specific destination. When choosing a walk, you can therefore decide between a set distance range and a named historical destination.

Foire du Ségala

The Foire du Ségala has been held in Tanus since 1970. You can sample authentic regional products from local producers, while local craftspeople showcase their skills and unique creations. Tastings and the participation of craftspeople may vary from one edition to another. Before planning, check the dates and programme for the edition you are interested in.
