Payrin-Augmontel appeals to visitors with a range of interests: at Espace Nature Lo Bruguet, walking and seasonal birdwatching take centre stage, while churches, the MJC and memorial sites reveal the area’s architectural history and local culture. You can choose the focus of your stay based on nature, architecture or sporting activities.
Nature and birdwatching at Espace Nature Lo Bruguet
Espace Nature Lo Bruguet is designed as a recreation and walking area. Its facilities include circular trails, benches, picnic tables, play areas for children and teenagers, and a birdwatching station. Information boards cover the site’s development, its flora and its birds. Walking, resting and observing nature are therefore different aspects of the same place. Many birds nest here, and the European bee-eater can also be spotted. Birdwatching is seasonal, so the time of year matters if this is your focus. Some facilities may be renewed over time. If you plan to use a particular play or picnic facility, check its current status in advance.
Churches: architectural history and furnishings
The Église de Payrin offers a glimpse into different phases of its architectural history. Cistercian monks built it around an earlier chapel; the choir and the first bay of the nave date from the 14th and 15th centuries. The first bay is the first section of the nave, marked off by supports. Inside, the corbels on the pillars are decorated with leaf motifs, angels’ heads, fantastic animals, unicorns and dragons.
The Église d’Augmontel has a different highlight: its holy water font is considered the church’s finest ornament and a testament to Augmontel’s illustrious past. The two churches thus offer different points of interest—from architectural phases and stone carvings to a particularly notable furnishing.
Remembrance and local culture
A plaque in the Payrin cemetery commemorates 34 employees of Manufacture Eugène Alba La Source de Payrin who died for France during the First World War battles from 1914 to 1918. In Augmontel, the Puits de l’Arnaude remains as a stone well; a few other wells can still be found in the village. The plaque preserves the memory of a specifically named group and period, while the wells draw attention to surviving architectural features of the village.
The MJC d’Augmontel is part of local culture, keeping local and regional traditions alive through dance, song, music and Occitan theatre. It is regarded as the oldest MJC in the Tarn department and the third-oldest in France. Its history adds a cultural dimension to the architectural and historical landmarks.
Sport as another focus
The Complexe sportif de La Naure in Payrin includes a multi-purpose hall, an outdoor tennis court and three football pitches. This facility is clearly distinct from the Lo Bruguet nature area: here the focus is on dedicated sports facilities and a hall, while Lo Bruguet offers walking trails and nature observation. Some sports facilities may be renewed over time; if you plan to use a specific court or the hall, check the current status of the facility you want to use in advance.
The season also matters when choosing your focus: birdwatching is seasonal, while architectural history, church ornamentation and the memorial plaque offer other topics that are not tied to the birdwatching season.
