Montgey brings together an easy circular walk, a château with a clearly described architectural design, and a craft workshop. The Boucle des Pyrénées offers scenic views; at the château, architecture and history take centre stage, while Tout près d’ici focuses on craftsmanship. Before your trip, you can weigh up whether outdoor activity, heritage or creative crafts should shape your visit.
Circular walk and scenery
The Boucle des Pyrénées is an easy, 6.8-kilometre PR circular walk for families. The walk is estimated to take around two hours—a helpful timeframe for planning it into your day. The route passes through the communes of Aguts, Montgey and Puéchoursi. Before setting out, check the published route and local conditions.
The route offers views of the Lauragais countryside, the Montagne Noire and the Sor plain. When the Autan wind blows, you can see the Pyrenees range across the Lauragais depression. Montgey itself is situated on a hill and offers views of the Montagne Noire and the Pyrenees. The local description therefore highlights the view from the hill; the possible view along the route across the depression to the Pyrenees range is explicitly dependent on the Autan wind.
The starting point of the Boucle is accessible by public transport. As timetables and transport networks can change, it is advisable to check the connection for your travel date.
Château and local history
The Château de Montgey has a square layout around a central courtyard. It also has four towers and a convex southern façade, meaning a façade that curves outward. Its present-day appearance dates from the 15th and 16th centuries. These architectural details answer different questions: the layout describes the overall arrangement, while the towers and southern façade are distinctive structural features.
The Battle of Montgey is also part of the town’s history. It took place in April 1211 and is regarded as a significant event in the Albigensian Crusade. This historical landmark predates the 15th and 16th centuries, to which the château’s present-day appearance dates.
A report from August 2024 described annual guided tours at the château during the Journées du Patrimoine. According to the report, after Pierre Bouyssou had led the tours, his children and grandchildren took over. Check the relevant dates and access arrangements for your visit.
