A rock weighing around 780 tonnes rests on a base just one square metre in area: La Peyro Clabado shows how prominently granite shapes the landscape around Lacrouzette. This landmark is located on Pic des Fourches. Other picturesque granite rocks are scattered throughout the wooded landscape; Lacrouzette also lies within the protected natural landscape of the Parc Régional du Haut Languedoc. Rock formations, woodland, and trails give a stay here a clear focus on nature and hiking.

Granite Rocks and Unusual Shapes

At La Peyro Clabado, two very different scales meet: around 780 tonnes resting on a base just one square metre in area. Erosion has formed hollows beneath the rock, known as marmites. This landmark is notable not only for its large block of granite, but also for its eroded hollows.

La pyramide et sa table d’orientation offers a different perspective. The granite-ball pyramid includes a terrace and an orientation table; from the terrace, the view stretches across the Castres plain and its surroundings. While La Peyro Clabado is a single rock formation in the spotlight, the terrace draws the eye to a wider landscape. This gives granite and its surroundings two different ways to take centre stage.

Hiking Trails with Different Highlights

The Sentier des Merveilles is in the middle of the forest on the Crémaussel plateau and combines hiking with discovery. Its yellow circular trail is about 1.5 km long. Viewing devices help visitors spot rocks hidden in the vegetation. The trail is considered suitable for families and has no major difficulties. The combination of a woodland path and the search for hidden rocks defines this walk.

The Roc de l’Oie is on the Sentier des Merveilles near Crémaussel. It is open every day all year round, with free access. Check access conditions again before your trip.

The Sentier des Venelles starts at Place du Théron in the centre of Lacrouzette and offers a chance to discover ancient standing stones in the heart of the community. This gives visitors a clear choice of route: the Sentier des Merveilles focuses on woodland and hidden rocks, while the Sentier des Venelles takes in the town centre and its ancient stones. Marked trails also offer opportunities for walks in the region around Lacrouzette.

Church and Art in the Town Centre

The centre also has a cultural highlight: Notre-Dame du Granit is a neo-Gothic church built in Lacrouzette in 1892. It houses a fresco by Nicolaï Greschny and monumental engravings by sculptor Jacques Bourges. Its architecture, painting, and engravings give the building several specific cultural connections. Alongside the rocks and woodland, it offers a distinct perspective on the town’s architecture and works of art.
