A history of industry embodied in machinery gives Lacaune a distinctive cultural character: the Filature Ramond was founded in 1841, and its working machinery is listed in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments. There is also church art, trails of widely varying lengths, water activities and regional specialities. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between the different highlights: one circular trail takes about an hour, the route to Montalet leads to a summit, and the Tunnel du Petit Train is open for a limited period.

Heritage: technology, architectural history and everyday life

The Filature Ramond brings together two aspects of industrial history: its founding date and its working machinery. The Église Notre-Dame de l’Assomption was built in 1668 on the foundations of an 11th-century chapel. The building thus brings together two points in time: the older chapel as its foundation and the later church, built in 1668. Its features include luminous stained-glass windows, altarpieces signed by Greschny and a monumental organ.

The Statue-Menhir Pierre Plantée adds another kind of heritage; it is classified as a historic monument. A museum in Lacaune has around fifteen rooms displaying aspects of local everyday life. These include a schoolroom from 1880, as well as exhibits about the Enfant sauvage and the thermal baths. The museum’s themes therefore range from the schoolroom to other aspects of the town’s history.

Lacaune is also home to the Mémorial de la déportation des juifs et des victimes du nazisme. On 13 January 1942, the prefect of Tarn selected Lacaune as a place of forced residence for foreign Jews.

Routes and opening times

The Circuit des fontaines is a 5 km circular trail for exploring Lacaune’s heritage at your own pace and takes about an hour. The Circuit No. 8 – Trail du Montalet has a different focus: its 17.5 km route leads from the centre of Lacaune to the summit of Montalet, at an altitude of 1,259 m. The trails therefore differ both in length and destination: one is a loop for exploring the heritage, while the other leads to a named summit.

Opening times are also worth checking when planning your visit. The Tunnel du Petit Train is open from 1 May to 14 October; check these seasonal opening dates before your trip. The Voie Verte is accessible all year round.

Water landscapes and specialities

The Monts de Lacaune are home to streams, rivers and lakes. This landscape is ideal for fishing, water sports and hiking. Access to Le Gijou is free; you need a fishing licence to fish. As access conditions vary by season, check them before your visit.

If you would also like to get to know Lacaune through its specialities, a visit to Salaisons Oberti ends with a tasting of Lacaune ham with PGI status and other specialities in the shop. The tasting is therefore part of the end of the visit, offering a distinct culinary highlight alongside the cultural and natural attractions.
