Fauch combines a focus on history with a walk from the village into the surrounding countryside: the Chemin des Puechs en Assou is a 12 km circular walk through local history. It also features the Église Saint Vincent, the former fortress and other designated heritage sites, as well as seasonal walnut picking. When choosing your destination, you can weigh up whether the walk, local history or the opportunity to pick walnuts should shape your stay.
The Chemin des Puechs en Assou
The circular walk first passes through Fauch and then continues into the surrounding countryside. The village and its surroundings are therefore part of a route that combines local history with changing scenery. At 12 km, the walk calls for a time commitment of its own; plan according to your personal walking pace. Parking for the Chemin is available at the town hall square, and the starting point is on the edge of the D13. Check this location information locally before travelling.
Fortress, church and heritage
The former fortress of Fauch was the scene of civil wars at the end of the 16th century; it was besieged between 1621 and 1653. The Église Saint Vincent is the only surviving remnant of the fortress today. It is documented as early as 1200 and was rebuilt and extended at the end of the 19th century. Thus, an early record of the church and a much later building phase sit side by side, while the fortress’s history of conflict dates to the 16th and 17th centuries.
Also designated as heritage to be protected and enhanced are the washhouse on the D41A/Rue du lavoir, the dovecote in the hamlet of Le Colombier on the D13, the wayside cross at Les Fontariès on the D41/Ch. des Fontariès, and Square Dom Rey with its monument. The named sites range from buildings to a wayside cross and a square with a monument. This means Fauch’s heritage can be understood through more than just the former fortress.
Walnuts and seasonal picking
GAEC de Mousquette in Fauch offers fresh and dried walnuts in 5 kg and 10 kg quantities. As availability is seasonal, check again before travelling. At GAEC de Mousquette in Les Fontariès, 81120 Fauch, you can pick walnuts at the farm every day in October from 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm. This time window places your visit in the afternoon; confirm the dates and availability in advance.
Picnic spots in the village
There are two picnic spots in Fauch: one at the entrance to the village from the direction of Ronel, and one in the village centre next to the old washhouse. Their locations offer a simple choice between the village entrance and a break by the washhouse. The washhouse is also designated as heritage to be protected and enhanced, so a picnic break there can be combined with a visit to one of the named heritage sites.
