From the Musée-mine départemental, the Balade en sol mineur leads to the Homps mining settlement. Information panels along the route tell visitors about the daily lives of miners and their families in Cagnac-les-Mines. Here, industrial history is not just a series of technological developments, but also the story of a place and its residents.

Mining History on Trails and in the Museum

The Musée-mine départemental is in Cagnac-les-Mines, at the heart of the former Carmaux-Albi mining basin. It offers technical and social insights into seven centuries of coal-mining history. The Balade en sol mineur adds a vivid focus: its panels draw attention to the lives of miners and their families. Together, the museum and route offer different perspectives on the same subject—the development of mining and its importance in everyday life.

Today, the Voie verte Chemin des Mineurs connects Albi and Cagnac-les-Mines for walkers and cyclists. The Chemin des Mineurs follows the route of a former railway line. Between Gaillaguès and the mines of Cagnac, it was used to transport coal and miners from 1894 to 1950. Understanding the different routes helps distinguish two aspects: the present-day connection between Albi and Cagnac and the railway line’s former use in mining. Before your trip, check whether any temporary works are affecting the route.

Homps: Housing Settlement and Daily Life

The Cité minière des Homps was built after the First World War to house foreign workers recruited to reinforce the ranks of the miners. The original settlement consisted of around a hundred adjoining homes. Its size and history offer a tangible picture of the mining settlement that the Balade en sol mineur leads to.

The Maison du Polonais also offers insights into the daily lives of miners. Period furnishings and information panels about mining and the layout of the settlement are among the things to see there. Individual visitors can enter the Maison du Polonais after making a reservation in advance to collect the key. Guided tours of the Cité minière des Homps are available by prior reservation. If you are planning a guided tour, confirm the arrangements before travelling.

Another Perspective on the Region

The Église Saint-Dalmazy offers a glimpse into a different historical period. It has been listed as a historic monument since December 9, 1970. It may date from the late 15th or early 16th century; the frescoes also appear to be from that period. This uncertain dating is part of the building’s history and should not be taken as a precisely established construction date.

In the region around Cagnac-les-Mines, Cap Découverte was created through the redevelopment of a former mining site. Six municipalities in the mining basin were involved, including Cagnac-les-Mines. As a leisure, cultural, economic and tourism zone, the project illustrates the different roles envisaged for the redevelopment of the former mining site.

At Lac des Homps

Lac des Homps is a natural recreation spot near the settlement of the same name and the Musée-mine départemental. On the shore, you can fish, walk, run or have a picnic in peaceful, pleasant surroundings. The lake thus adds opportunities to spend time outdoors to the area’s historical attractions. The mining-history trails and a visit to the lake offer different focuses: the former centers on mining and settlement life, while the latter is about the activities available along the shore.

When choosing your accommodation, you can take these interests into account without turning the individual places into a fixed itinerary: the museum and settlement history, the Voie verte and Lac des Homps each offer their own way to experience Cagnac-les-Mines. For visits that require reservations, it is advisable to confirm the arrangements in advance; if you plan to travel along the Voie verte, check for notices about possible temporary works.
