Vaïssac brings together a range of travel interests: walking trails through forests, fields and hilly landscapes, Lac du Gouyre and the parish church of Saint-Martin. Each attraction has its own character. When planning a trip, you can therefore choose based on the landscape, trail destination or architecture, rather than treating all the experiences as one combined itinerary.

Walking trails with different highlights

The Circuit de la Vayssède PR1 starts at Vaïssac town hall; parking is available at the village hall. The trail crosses the slopes around the Vayssède and Longues-Aygues springs, passing through forests and fields. It also offers views of the hills around Vaïssac and the Aveyron plain. The spring-fed slopes, wooded and open stretches, and views across the plain give this circular trail several distinct landscape features.

The route description for the Circuit des Crêtes PR2 is older, but the trail is still listed in the current intercommunal hiking trail inventory. It starts in the hills above Vaïssac, passes through woodland and returns through the Devèses stream valley. On the Circuit de Cabertat PR3, the Mausolée de Cabertat memorial stands at the highest point. The Circuit du Gouyre PR4 follows the shore of Lac du Gouyre and returns to Vaïssac along a wooded ridge path.

The descriptions help you choose based on the landscape and destination: PR1 combines spring-fed slopes with woodland, fields and views; PR4 follows the lakeshore, while PR3 leads to the memorial at the highest point. PR2 focuses on woodland and the Devèses valley. The offer also includes Quercy Gravel, with seven signposted circular routes starting at Lac du Gouyre.

Lac du Gouyre and nature

Lac du Gouyre covers 54 hectares and is freely accessible year-round. The lake features in several of the options described: it is the starting point for the seven signposted Quercy Gravel circular routes and lies along part of the Circuit du Gouyre PR4. There is also a botanical nature trail by the lake. A prefectural order protects the biotope, making both the natural setting and its protected status defining features of the area around Lac du Gouyre.

The lake can therefore be viewed in different ways: as a landscape, as a place with a botanical nature trail, and as a point of reference for two activities that either start there or follow the lakeshore. This distinction is useful when planning a trip, depending on whether the lake itself or a particular circular route is the main focus.

Parish church of Saint-Martin and history

The parish church of Saint-Martin is an architectural highlight. Its single-nave hall has four bays and a ribbed vault. Painted ornamental motifs appear on the vaults and engaged columns. Together, these features show the church’s spatial layout and decorative design. A plaque above the portal states that it was built in 1885–1886. This date adds a clear historical reference to the architectural details.

The cèpe de Vaïssac also has a culinary connection: it is listed in France’s culinary heritage. This locally named food adds another aspect to consider when exploring Vaïssac, alongside its architecture and walking trails.
