Septfonds brings together several distinct cultural and historical themes: hatmaking, aviation history and dolmens, as well as remembrance of the Camp de Judes. They offer different ways to explore the history of the town, rather than forming a single historical narrative. This lets you choose a focus when planning your trip: places of remembrance, local craftsmanship or walks tracing cultural heritage.

Remembering the Camp de Judes

In 2025, the Spanish government recognised the Mémorial du camp de Judes as a site of democratic remembrance. A reconstructed barrack houses a permanent exhibition and information panels about the camp’s history and the living conditions of the internees. Septfonds’ Spanish Cemetery contains the graves of Spanish Republicans who died at the Camp de Judes. The historical interpretation at the Mémorial and the commemoration of those who died in the camp at the cemetery are therefore two distinct aspects.

Hatmaking and local stories

Another way to explore the town’s history is La Mounière, a museum in Septfonds. It presents local stories, including hatmaking and the aviation history of aviation pioneer Dieudonné Costes, who was born in Septfonds. La Mounière is also part of France’s network of Shoah memorial sites. Costes’ birth in Septfonds anchors the aviation theme biographically in the town, while hatmaking offers a glimpse into its local craft history.

Septfonds’ straw-hat tradition dates back to an activity involving straw plaiting and straw-hat making that was registered in 1796. In the 19th century, Septfonds developed into a major centre for straw-hat production. A walking route explores this history: “Sur les pas des chapelleries” starts at La Mounière and reveals traces of Septfonds’ former hat factories. The subject can thus be encountered both as a historical development and through the remains of former factories.

Dolmens and walking routes

The Dolmen La Tombe du Géant is still partly embedded in a tumulus with a diameter of 18 metres. The dolmen was classified as a Monument historique in 1889. The La Tombe du Géant circular route carries the FFRandonnée label; much of the route is shaded and flat. Of the approximately fifteen dolmens recorded in Septfonds, four are still visible. The Dolmen Combal is also located in Septfonds. The 18-metre diameter refers to the tumulus of La Tombe du Géant, not the dolmen itself; four of the approximately fifteen dolmens recorded in Septfonds are still visible.

The seven wells that give Septfonds its name can also be visited on a walk. There are therefore various starting points for walks: local craft traditions, a named circular route with shaded, flat sections, and the town’s wells.
