Five Flemish tapestry panels extend for more than 25 metres in the choir of the Collégiale Saint-Martin. At Lac Vert, by contrast, walking and fishing take centre stage. These different attractions make Montpezat-de-Quercy appealing to travellers who want to take local history, art and outdoor activities into account when choosing a destination. When planning your visit, it helps to distinguish between a visit to the village, a wine-themed experience and a route through the landscape and its heritage; each option has a different focus.

Art and Local History

The Collégiale Saint-Martin offers a specific art-historical highlight: its choir houses a tapestry from Flanders comprising five panels. The work, measuring more than 25 metres in length, was woven in the early 16th century. Visitors interested in textile art can focus not just on a single motif, but on an extensive ensemble as part of their visit to the church.

The church is open year-round outside of services. In summer, guided tours of the village and collegiate church are organised. If you are planning a guided tour, check the dates before travelling; the seasonal guided tours and year-round access to the church outside of services are two separate visiting arrangements.

The village’s history can also be understood through different points in time. Montpezat-de-Quercy was built around an early castrum from the 11th century onwards. The Porte de ville is a 14th-century town gate, designated a historic monument in 1964. The village’s early origins and a later structure thus stand side by side as distinct points of reference.

Wine and the History of Quercy

For wine enthusiasts, Quercy Généreux and the Cave des Vignerons du Quercy offer two different ways to explore the subject. Quercy Généreux presents the agricultural and wine-growing history of Quercy in a scenographic display. At the Cave des Vignerons du Quercy, visitors can learn about grape varieties, taste and buy wine, and meet the producers. This distinguishes a cultural and historical perspective from an encounter with wine and its producers.

Walks and Trails at Lac Vert

Lac Vert caters to different interests: it has a fishing pond and a picnic area; swimming is prohibited. Check the rules on site before your visit. The area around the lake is suitable for hiking and fishing.

The Chemin de Saux circular trail passes Lac Vert, reaches the 14th-century church of Saux with its wall paintings, follows the Lemboulas and returns to the village through the woods. This distinguishes a walk by the lake from a circular route with several named points along the way. A stroll through the streets of Montpezat-de-Quercy also offers the chance to discover the local heritage and enjoy views of the Quercy countryside.
