Génébrières combines a glimpse into the history of the village with nature experiences around the forest and Lac du Tordre. The French Ministry of Culture’s heritage inventory dates most of the buildings to the 18th and 19th centuries. At the same time, forest accounts for a significant proportion of the commune’s area. This gives you two complementary themes to consider when planning your trip: the village’s architectural history and trails through rural, hilly landscapes.

Architectural history and historical context

At the time when most of the buildings were constructed, agriculture was the only occupation. The buildings’ construction and daily life at the time therefore belong to the same historical context. If you are interested in local history, you can make this connection a cultural focus of your stay. It is clearly distinct from a tour whose main appeal is its scenery and viewpoints: here, the buildings and their place in history take centre stage.

Rural views on the Circuit de la Forêt

The Circuit de la Forêt begins at the car park of the village’s events hall. Along the route, you can enjoy rural, hilly landscapes and numerous viewpoints over the surrounding countryside. The terrain and wide-ranging views are the defining features of this tour. The named starting point helps you factor the route into your plans, while the viewpoints shape the landscape experience along the way.

Lac du Tordre and the forest

Lac du Tordre is an artificial reservoir of around 70 hectares, located in the communes of Léojac and Génébrières. A hiking trail of around 15 kilometres alongside the lake offers a chance to experience the surrounding nature and is also accessible by mountain bike. Check the trail’s conditions and accessibility before setting out. Lac du Tordre is also designated as an Espaces Naturels Sensibles.

A 2024 tourism publication puts the Génébrières forest at 587 hectares, equivalent to 32 percent of the commune’s area. It states that 89 percent consists of different kinds of deciduous trees and 6 percent of conifers, and describes the forest’s biodiversity as rich. These figures shed light on different aspects: the forest’s share of the area and its composition. Compared with the approximately 70 hectares of Lac du Tordre, the forest area is considerably larger.

Which tour suits your plans?

To help choose, you can compare the two routes based on the features that matter to your plans. For the lakeside trail, its approximate length and the choice between walking and mountain biking are specific criteria. The Circuit de la Forêt is characterised by its starting point at the events hall, the hilly terrain and the viewpoints. Choose according to whether you would rather base your decision on distance and how you travel, or on the scenery and wide-ranging views.

Horse rides in the forest

An equestrian centre offers horse rides in the forest around Lac du Tordre. As availability can change, check with the operator in advance. This adds another type of activity to the options on foot and by mountain bike, taking you into the forest around the lake.
