Vielle-Aure offers a range of themes to consider when planning a trip: historic church architecture, trails with different features, and seasonal activities on the water. You can choose your focus based on whether you are particularly interested in architectural history, a route’s connection to the pilgrimage trail, or fishing.

Churches and Architectural History

The Église Saint-Barthélémy was probably built during the Romanesque period in the 11th or 12th century. The apse and bell tower have survived from this building phase. Since 16 June 1944, the church has been classified as a French Monument historique. The classification therefore reflects both its presumed period of construction and a precisely dated protected status.

The Chapelle d'Hospitaliers de Saint-Jean-de-Jérusalem Saint-Pierre was built between 1170 and 1190. It consists of a single-nave church and a semicircular apse. The capitals at the portal feature sculpted decoration, with a chrismon in the centre. The information about the church and the chapel highlights different architectural features: on the one hand, surviving elements from the presumed Romanesque building phase; on the other, the layout and portal design.

The Musée de la Mine de Vielle-Aure adds mining and mineralogy to this cultural selection. This means that, alongside religious architecture, you can also choose a different historical and scientific focus.

Hiking Trails with Different Features

The GR 10 heads west from Vielle-Aure via the Col de Portet and Lac de l'Oule, before reaching the lakes of Aubert and Aumar. The route is intended for experienced hikers. The Découverte de Vielle-Aure hiking trail follows part of the Chemin de Saint-Jacques de Compostelle. The two trails therefore differ in the features that may guide your choice: the GR 10 has a defined route and named waypoints, while the Découverte trail is partly linked to the pilgrimage route.

Fishing and Activities on the Water

At the Base de Loisirs d'Agos, you can use picnic tables, playgrounds and walking trails around the lakes free of charge all year round. Fishing is possible there in summer. Children can learn to fish during morning fishing sessions. If you plan to take part in one of these sessions, check the current date in advance.

The activities have different seasonal conditions: the picnic tables, playgrounds and walking trails are available year-round, while fishing at the Base is a summer activity. Fishing is also possible in Vielle-Aure along the Neste and at the waters of Agos. These locations offer additional specific options if fishing is one of your travel interests.

A Morning Class

Le Fournil de l'Ours offers a free morning pastry-making class with its pastry chefs. Registration with the sales staff is required, and availability may vary. If you plan to attend, arrange the date with the sales staff in advance.
