Vielle-Adour offers two distinct reasons to visit: several cycling routes pass through the commune, and La Brèche aux Loups is dedicated to animals and birds from the Pyrenees, as well as a large butterfly collection. When planning, it is worth distinguishing routes by length, elevation profile and route type. Visiting the collection, meanwhile, requires a separate appointment.

Cycling: Circuit, flat terrain and panoramic views

The Le tour des cinq coteaux circuit is 62 kilometres long, passes through Vielle-Adour and is intended for experienced cyclists. Its length and target audience provide a clear guide when choosing: this is a longer circuit for fit cyclists. The location is only one factor in choosing a route; the stated distance and level of challenge are just as important.

The Vielle/Montgaillard circuit 1 FFC follows a different route pattern: it runs from Bagnères-de-Bigorre to Vielle-Adour, mostly through flat terrain and with little elevation gain. This makes it possible to compare a route with clearly named endpoints against a 62-kilometre circuit. The differences therefore lie in both the route type and the profile described.

La plaine par les coteaux de Barbazan offers another planning option. The route can be cycled year-round, making it an option for trips at different times of the year. On the section through Vielle-Adour, it follows Section 6 to the D8 at 2 Route de Hiis. This combines a seasonal note with a specific landmark for the local route. Check road conditions before setting off.

Le col de la croix blanche par Visker also passes through Vielle-Adour. The route offers a scenic mountain road with panoramic views of Lourdes. Compared with the mostly flat Vielle/Montgaillard route, the features mentioned fall into different categories: the latter is characterised by flat terrain and little elevation gain, while this route features a mountain road and views towards Lourdes. This lets you distinguish between the two routes by profile and scenery.

La Brèche aux Loups: Animals and butterflies

La Brèche aux Loups has a natural history focus. In Vielle-Adour, the collection displays taxidermied animals and birds from the Pyrenees. It also includes a butterfly collection from five continents, with more than 1,500 specimens. The visit thus combines the regional connection of the Pyrenean animals with a collection whose geographical scope extends beyond the region.

A self-guided visit is possible by appointment. Confirm the appointment and access arrangements before you arrive. Unlike choosing a cycling route, making these arrangements is an integral part of planning your visit.

The Vielle-Adour – Route de Tarbes bus stop is about a ten-minute walk from La Brèche aux Loups. If you use the stop as a reference point for your visit, you can factor this walk into your travel plans.
