Sailhan sits like a balcony above the Haute Vallée d’Aure. If you would like to make village history and landscape the focus of your stay, there are several distinct points of interest: the 1.5-kilometre Pays d’Art et d’Histoire circular trail, Saint-Laurent Church, the washhouse and the métier à ferrer (cattle-shoeing device). At the Moulin de la Mousquère, there is also an educational trail featuring nature themes. This gives you a clear choice when planning between village history, a heritage trail and nature observation.

Heritage in the buildings

Saint-Laurent Church was built in the Gothic style at the end of the 19th century. Wooden statues of Saint Lawrence and Saint Andrew stand on either side of the choir. The Neo-Gothic church also houses a permanent exhibition of old photographs. As visiting arrangements may change, check current visiting information before your visit. A Romanesque chrismon from Comminges is believed to date from the 11th or 12th century. Sailhan’s heritage therefore spans from a medieval-dated object to a church built in the late 19th century.

Sailhan’s washhouse was built as an extension of the ensemble of a fountain and livestock trough with raised basins. A fresco by Marie Troussicot depicts three historical figures from the village: Marguerite Maria, Jeanne-Marie Menvielle and Marie Griet-Ferras. The combination can be read in two ways: the structure points to rural infrastructure, while the fresco recalls people from the village’s history.

Another landmark is the métier à ferrer on a small rise at the end of chemin du Pi, next to a Calvary. There is a viewpoint there for observing birds of prey. Its location thus combines a site of rural heritage with a specific nature theme.

Walking and nature themes

The Pays d’Art et d’Histoire circular trail is an easy 1.5-kilometre walk starting in Sailhan. Four information panels introduce the history and heritage of the village. GPX and KML files are available for digital navigation and can be exported to a GPS device or another navigation device. Route details and digital files may be updated by the tourist office. Check both before setting out if you plan to follow the route.

The Moulin de la Mousquère stands on the banks of the Mousquère stream, halfway between Sailhan and Estensan. The site has an educational trail covering topics such as birdsong, characteristic Pyrenean animals and bees. Unlike the four panels on the village trail, the focus here is on nature rather than history and heritage.

Sailhan also offers the TIR A L’ARC NATURE activity, combining hiking and archery. It includes a woodland course where you can discover Pyrenean fauna and flora. Unlike the history trail, this activity has a stronger focus on movement and nature. Seasonal availability may change; check the current dates before making plans.

A festival as another cultural connection

The Es de Sailho festival committee organises the festival of Saint Lawrence, Sailhan’s patron saint. If you would like to plan your stay around the festival, check the event dates before booking.
