The Les lacs de Bours route follows a variety of roads and paths to Orleix and through the village. At 22.6 kilometres, with an estimated duration of 5.3 hours, it provides a concrete basis for planning your time. The landscape, Saint-Christophe church, and regional products also offer further points of interest for your trip.
Routes with different focuses
The CaminAdour is a path along the banks of the Adour, running mainly along the smaller river channel on the right bank. At Bours, Soues, and Tarbes, it connects to the wider Trait Vert trail network. Les lacs de Bours offers a measurable planning focus in terms of distance and estimated duration; the CaminAdour focuses on its riverside course and network connections. This makes it possible to choose between the two routes according to your interests.
Landscape and village history
Orleix’s key landscape features include the hedgerow landscape of the plain, the forest, waterways, and the old village layout. This mix offers more than a single route to explore: when planning your trip, you can make the landscape and village itself a focus, alongside a particular path.
At Saint-Christophe church, a dated classification of certain furnishings and a cautious dating of particular building features come together. The main altar and its baldachin, as well as the pulpit, were classified as historic movable objects in 1942. Parts of the building—including the west gable, north wall, elements of the south chapel, the three-sided chancel, and the sacristy—are believed to date from the Late Middle Ages, between the 15th and 16th centuries. The distinction is important: the classification applies to movable objects, while the dating refers to the specified parts of the church building.
Cheese and regional products
Ferme du Castérieu is located at 1 chemin de Castérieu, 65800 Orleix. It produces farmhouse cheese made from pasteurised cow’s milk, sheep’s milk, or a mixture of both. The range may change; check the visiting arrangements before you arrive.
When the Halles at Ferme Deth Bosc in Orleix opened, they offered products from local farmers, regional cheeses, meat, preserved foods, local drinks, and baked goods. Before visiting, check whether the Halles are currently operating and which products are available.
Bus timetable, library, and event
Bus route T11 runs between Bours/Orleix and Verdun, stopping at Orleix-Mairie. Check the current timetable before travelling. The Louis Carmouze Library opened in February at 9 rue des Platanes in Orleix. Check the details of public access again before visiting.
