If you’re looking for accommodation in Nestier, you can plan your trip around two distinct themes: the Calvaire du Mont Arès, with its chapels and the Le Mont Arès hike, or the Ôcybelles leisure area with its natural pools. Each offers a different focus. Would you like to spend most of your time exploring cultural history and hiking, or also include exercise, outdoor games and a picnic?

Calvaire du Mont Arès: chapels, views and culture

The Calvaire du Mont Arès was built on Mont Arès and has twelve chapels. In 1989, it was added to the supplementary list of French historic monuments. The chapel at the summit overlooks the Neste plain; the Calvaire can be reached on foot. There is also an open-air theatre at the Calvaire, where cultural events are held. The chapels, views and theatre give the site both religious and historical significance, as well as a cultural dimension. If a cultural event will be a highlight of your stay, check the event date in advance.

Hikes and routes in Nestier

The Le Mont Arès hike starts in Nestier and follows the GR78, the Pyrenean foothills trail. After descending, the route passes the oratories of the Stations of the Cross and a former quarry before reaching Eglise Nestier. Another option is the Chronos discovery route, “Montons au calvaire!”: it covers 2.5 km through the streets of Nestier. The two options differ in format: Le Mont Arès is a hike along the GR78 with named stops, while Chronos is a discovery route through the village streets. This can help you decide whether to include a hiking trail with stops or a route focused on the village in your plans. The Chronos route was published for the 2026 season; check whether it is available on your dates before planning.

Eglise Nestier and its history

Eglise Nestier stands on the site of the medieval motte known as Eth Castérot. This connection makes the church a historical point of interest in its own right, in addition to the Calvaire. It is open during events and visits. If the church is part of your plans, time your visit to coincide with one of these occasions. Together with the chapels on Mont Arès, it adds another site connected with local history to the cultural itinerary.

Ôcybelles: swimming and leisure area

The natural biological swimming area Ôcybelles is located on the boundary between Saint Laurent de Neste and Nestier. A fitness trail runs around the natural pools. The tree-lined leisure area covers 1.5 hectares; outdoor games include a beach volleyball court. The site also has a fitness and walking trail, as well as a picnic area. Exercise, games and a picnic break make this a distinct leisure destination. In this respect, Ôcybelles differs from Mont Arès, where the focus is on chapels, stops along the route and local history.
