Lortet combines a distinctive cave history with waterside and outdoor activities. One important point to bear in mind when planning your trip: public access to the fortified caves is prohibited because of conservation needs and, in particular, the risk of falling. Check the access rules again before your trip.

Cave History and Archaeological Finds

The fortified caves overlook the Neste at an elevation of between 600 and 725 metres. A 17-metre-high spiral staircase, built in the 12th or 13th century, provided access to the fortified level. These figures describe different aspects of the site: the elevation of the caves and the height of the historic staircase.

Lortet’s prehistoric past is also tangible: a harpoon with two rows of barbs, dating from the Upper Magdalenian, was discovered in a cave in Lortet before 1902. Édouard Piette is credited with the discovery. Together with the medieval spiral staircase, the find points to widely separated periods in local history.

Water, Fishing and Nature

The municipality is home to the interactive water and history trail “L’Homme et l’eau, quelle histoire!” If you want to use the digital resource, check whether the app is available before your trip. A no-kill fishing stretch for fly fishing and Toc fishing has also been established along the river as it flows through the village. Local fishing conditions can change, so check in advance.

The natural environment is also defined by specific area names: the Type 2 ZNIEFF “Piémont calcaire, forestier et montagnard du Nistos en rive droite de la Neste” includes the Type 1 ZNIEFF site “Rochers de Lortet, le Mont”. The Type 1 site is therefore located within the larger Type 2 area—the two designations refer to different levels of protected area.

Walking Trails, Climbing and Getting There

Several walking trails lead from Lortet into the surrounding area, including the Tour du Mont. The Rocher d’Escalade de Lortet climbing crag offers 20 routes graded from 4 to 7b. As the routes available may change due to maintenance, check the information before your climb. From the car park at the prehistoric cave on the Route de Bazus, the crag is a five-minute walk away.

The activities also have different points of reference: walking trails lead into the surrounding area, the fishing stretch runs along the river through the village, and climbing routes are the focus at the Rocher d’Escalade. This makes it easy to choose based on your main interest without assuming that the activities form a single route.

For travel to the climbing crag, the LORTET – Hangar stop can serve as a landmark. It is on the LANNEMEZAN – SAINT LARY SOULAN routes; the crag is less than a 30-minute walk from the stop. If you plan to travel by bus, check the timetable for your travel date.
