Three themes come together in Chis to help you plan your trip: the Adour plain, the history associated with Saint Ferréol and the Trait Vert routes. You can therefore focus your stay on local history, consider walking or cycling routes, or plan a meal with a themed setting. If you are looking for a holiday rental, these different interests give you a concrete basis for choosing your destination.

Landscape and local history

Chis lies in the Adour plain; the banks of the Alaric Canal mark the boundary of the commune. The plain and the canal are the landscape’s points of reference for your stay. The Trait Vert routes add ways to explore the surrounding area on foot, by bicycle or—unless otherwise stated for a particular circular route—on horseback.

Chis church dates from the 19th century and houses a statue of Saint Ferréol from the early 16th century. The building and the statue therefore belong to different periods: the artwork dates back further than the church’s construction.

The bells also mark different points in time. Chis’s small bell dates from 1851 and was donated by Count Henri de Castelbajac and Léontine de Villeneuve. The larger bell, Marie Ferréol, was consecrated in 1967. Their names and dates provide concrete historical reference points for the religious heritage.

The Saint-Ferréol Chapel is distinct from the church. Two statues were the focus of deep devotion there for centuries. On the traditional feast days of Saint Ferréol, 15 August and 18 September, the faithful came from neighbouring parishes to the chapel to pray before the two statues. These feast days and the prayers offered at the time are part of the town’s historical religious tradition.

Trait Vert: routes on foot, by bicycle or on horseback

The Trait Vert routes are accessible on foot and can be used by bicycle. Horse riding is also possible on the circular routes, unless otherwise explicitly stated. The choice of transport therefore depends in part on the information provided for each route; check it before choosing a circular route.

A Trait Vert route described in 2016 passed through the centre of Chis. At the time, a description of the network cited 165 kilometres across twelve circular routes, for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. These figures reflect the network as it was described at the time. If you are planning a specific route, check its current course and trail conditions before setting off.

Dining in a special setting

O'Domaine St Ferréol has a restaurant with a terrace. Immersive themed evenings or lunches are held there. The décor, costumes, service, menu and cocktails are each tailored to the chosen theme. This makes dining an option in its own right, alongside the cultural and historical attractions and the routes.

The offerings also include a seasonal menu and brunch in a charterhouse dating from the late 17th century. As themes and programmes may change and availability should be checked before your trip, confirm opening times and details of the offerings in advance. This lets you include a visit in your plans without assuming a particular date or programme.
