In Avezac-Prat-Lahitte, traces of prehistory meet medieval heritage and a hiking route with published route details. Meadows, the annual Rencon’Trad festival, and offerings related to honey and horticulture also give the area a range of distinctive themes.

Tumulus, tower and village church

The medieval Tour d’Avezac overlooks the village; its base is accessible. Its square shape suggests it was built in the 12th century. The tower is also considered a remnant of a fortified site around which the village developed. The commune restored the tower in 1997. Its base is accessible; path conditions may change. Check the current situation before visiting.

The Tumulus of l’Estaque has been classified as a historical monument since January 26, 1970, and is associated with the Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age. Avezac-Prat-Lahitte is also home to a significant protohistoric Iron Age necropolis with several tumuli, some of which are classified as historical monuments. A specifically named tumulus and a necropolis with several burial mounds thus represent different aspects of the area’s cultural heritage.

The village church dates from the 15th century and was later altered. A notable feature is its Baroque altarpiece from the 18th century, which is classified as a historical monument. At the center of the monumental altarpiece is Saint Bartholomew, the patron saint of the parish, beneath the Virgin Mary.

Landscape and hiking

Avezac-Prat-Lahitte lies on the edge of the Baronnies, facing the Pyrenean mountains. Prat and Lahitte are small, pleasant villages in a green landscape of meadows. Both individual architectural and archaeological monuments and the landscape contribute to the area’s character.

The D’Avezac à Prat hike combines views of Pic du Midi with the medieval tower, a fountain and the church of Avezac. The route is listed as taking four hours, covering twelve kilometers, with 450 meters of ascent. Duration, distance and ascent are distinct planning considerations. Views and trail conditions may vary; check current trail conditions before setting out.

La Marche du Bois also offers nature-focused excursions related to mountain hiking. Availability and booking details may change; check the current options in advance.
