Those considering Arcizans-Avant as a travel destination can look at two aspects separately: historic buildings and memorial sites, and hiking trails and seasonal activities in the area around Cabaliros. The following stops show the different priorities you can take into account when choosing where to go.

Church and Castle Remains

The Église Saint-Martin has Romanesque origins and was completely restored in the 17th century. It was listed as a historic monument by decree on 21 March 1979. The church is open to visitors; as access may change, it is advisable to check in advance whether visits are possible. The church is less than a 30-minute walk from the ARGELÈS-GAZOST – LycĂ©e & CollĂšge stop. Check the route in advance as well, since transport information may change.

Today, only the keep and the curtain walls of the feudal castle in Arcizans-Avant remain. The keep dates from the 14th century. The site known as “Butte du chñteau dit du Prince Noir” was listed by decree on 29 January 1944. These details provide different chronological reference points for the history of the area, without implying that a large castle complex must have existed.

Saint-Roch: Trail and Historical Account

Remains are preserved at the site of the Saint-Roch chapel. From the village, the path leads to the clearly visible pylon; near the summit, a slate slab on the left marks the site. Conditions may change, so check the trail before setting out. The chapel is known to have existed since 1656. Between 1658 and 1697, it was sometimes called N-D de la CastĂšre.

A church investigation recorded in 1783 that the chapel was the starting point for two pilgrimages: one on the eve of the Feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and another on Saint Roch's feast day. This is a historical account of the tradition at the time. It is distinct from the current trail and visitor information that you can check for your own stay.

Hiking and Activities around Cabaliros

The “Moun NĂ© de Cauterets, Pic de Cabaliros” Natura 2000 site also extends across the municipality of Arcizans-Avant. In the northern part of Cabaliros, hiking in the area is among the summer tourist activities. In winter, ski touring is practised there, particularly in the direction of Cabaliros; conditions vary from one winter to the next. The season is therefore an important distinction: hiking takes centre stage in summer, while ski touring is the focus in winter.

La Boucle de l'Arrieulat passes through Arcizans-Avant. It is described as a moderately difficult circular hike covering 6.1 kilometres, with a stated duration of three hours. The route is described as passable year-round, although trail conditions may change seasonally. Check conditions before setting out. The distance and duration can help you estimate how much time this particular loop will take.

Another route through Arcizans-Avant is the Circuit VTT n°10 – Val d'Azun – Le Cabaliros. It offers a different type of activity from the circular hike: while La Boucle de l'Arrieulat is designated as a hiking trail, the Circuit VTT is a mountain biking route. This lets you distinguish between the routes by the type of travel you prefer, rather than treating them as a single shared offering.
