Winegrowing and maize cultivation shape Villematier’s agriculture today, while the Ronde des vignes offers an 11.61-kilometre circular route through fields. Together with the church’s architectural history, these provide a range of ways to spend your stay: local history, wine, and time outdoors.
The Village and Getting Your Bearings
The centre of Villematier, with its town hall and church, stands on a promontory above the Tarn plain. The commune also includes the hamlet of Raygades, where the school and town hall were once located. The former public buildings in Raygades thus provide additional landmarks around today’s village centre.
The Church and Its Architectural History
The Église Saint-Pierre-les-Liens was built in the 18th century. Its bell-gable was built in 1818 to plans by the architect Constans and remodelled in 1852. This makes it possible to distinguish the church’s construction period from the later stages in the tower’s history.
A bell-gable is a type of bell tower built as a structure on the church wall. In Villematier, it has two clearly dated stages: its construction to Constans’ plans and its later remodelling. Visitors interested in architectural history will find specific dates here rather than just a general description of the church.
Winegrowing and Agriculture
Agriculture is Villematier’s most important economic sector today. Winegrowing in the Frontonnais AOC wine-growing area and maize cultivation shape the commune; both benefit from a modern irrigation system. The agricultural character of the area cannot therefore be attributed to winegrowing alone: maize is also an important crop.
Villematier’s vineyards are part of the Frontonnais. At Château des Peyraux, historic grape varieties such as Négrette, Prunelart, and Duras are used. The château follows the principles of organic farming and the Vins Méthode Nature label. Frontonnais refers to the regional wine-growing area, whereas Négrette, Prunelart, and Duras are the names of the grape varieties used.
Visits and tastings at Château des Peyraux are available by prior appointment. Arrange your visit before you arrive. Winegrowers in Villematier also offer cellar tours or a glass of wine to visitors. Contact each winegrower directly to find out which option suits your visit.
The Ronde des vignes
The Ronde des vignes is an 11.61-kilometre circular route through fields. The route includes lightly trafficked roads and wide paths, and can be walked at any time of year.
For planning purposes, it is useful to distinguish the walk from a winery visit: the Ronde des vignes can be walked at any time of year, while visits and tastings at Château des Peyraux require an appointment in advance. If you plan to do both, arrange your visit to the château directly and treat the walk as a separate activity.
