Get to know Saint-Frajou through two distinct experiences: the Musée de Peinture de Saint-Frajou brings together paintings, drawings, a children’s art gallery and art events; the Sentier du Lac is a circular trail through the hills to the lake. There is also an orientation table with a far-reaching panorama and local lore about the spring. To plan your visit, consider what you are looking for: art in several forms or a walk lasting several hours, with a clearly stated distance and walking time.

Art at the Musée de Peinture

The municipal Musée de Peinture de Saint-Frajou was founded in 2010 after the municipality received a gift of 30 works by the painter Ksenia Milicevic. Its permanent collection features paintings and drawings by Milicevic. This makes it possible to consider together both the municipal circumstances of the museum’s founding and the collection’s continuing connection to the same painter.

Children’s art gallery and art events

Since 2019, the Musée de Peinture has housed a permanent children’s art gallery displaying works from 35 countries. It complements Ksenia Milicevic’s paintings and drawings with an international perspective on children’s art. The two focuses therefore differ in their orientation: the permanent collection features works by a named painter, while the gallery brings together works from many countries. This distinction between a focus on a particular artist and a broad range of international origins offers a concrete point of reference when exploring the cultural program.

Since 2012, the Musée has hosted the Biennale Internationale de peinture d'enfants; the Salon international Art Résilience takes place every year in August. These dates serve different planning needs: August is a recurring reference point for the Salon, while the Biennale is part of the museum’s history as an event that has been held since 2012. If an event is a deciding factor in your stay, check the specific dates in advance.

Sentier du Lac and views

The Sentier du Lac is a moderate circular trail covering 9.9 kilometres, with a walking time of about 2 hours and 30 minutes. The approximate duration gives you an idea of the walk as an activity lasting several hours, rather than just a brief stop at the orientation table. The trail starts at this table, which offers a 360-degree view, winds through the hills of Saint-Frajou and reaches the Lake of Saint-Frajou.

The orientation table offers a panorama of the Coteaux and the Pyrenees, along with sweeping views across the landscape. This distinguishes the viewpoint from the circular trail: the panorama is at the starting point, while the lake lies along the route. The distance and approximate walking time help you plan the trail as a separate activity; plan other parts of your stay separately. Check route information and conditions before setting out.

The spring and local lore

The spring of Saint-Frajou is also associated with different forms of local lore. It is thought to have flowed since the earliest antiquity. According to a local legend, it sprang up when the martyr Saint Fragulphe was beheaded and his head rolled to this spot. Local tradition and certain witness accounts attribute miraculous properties to the water. Its age remains a supposition, its origin is told as a legend, and the effects of the water are attributed to local lore. For travellers interested in local traditions as well as art and landscapes, the spring offers a different way to discover Saint-Frajou.
