Saint-Aventin brings together sacred heritage and archaeological and Alpine themes: the pilgrimage church houses the tomb of Saint Aventin, while the cromlechs of the Espiau massif lie above the village. They can be reached on a walk of about an hour from the village. Superbagnères is also part of the municipality of Saint-Aventin—not the municipality of Bagnères-de-Luchon. This distinction helps you place the place names correctly when planning your trip.

Pilgrimage Church and Traditions

The church of Saint-Aventin is a Romanesque pilgrimage church with two bell towers typical of the Pyrenees. Its remarkable portal is decorated with sculptures; its historiated capitals depict scenes from the life and martyrdom of Saint Aventin. Inside, there are notable wall frescoes. Several features thus stand out in this single building: the towers, the sculptural decoration of the portal and the frescoes.

The pilgrimage in honor of Saint Aventin took place on his feast day, June 13, and for centuries drew pilgrims from across the Pyrenees and from Spain. This tradition is part of the area's history. Another legend is associated with the Chapelle et le pas de Saint-Aventin: an elongated hollow in a slate slab is said to be the hermit's footprint.

Landscape and Protected Areas

The protected areas have different dates and locations. The Chapelle de Saint-Aventin and its surroundings have been part of a protected natural and urban landscape zone since November 3, 1944. The municipal pastures on the Superbagnères plateau have been protected since April 27, 1927. In addition, part of the classified Vallée du Lys site lies within the municipality of Saint-Aventin.

Walks, Hikes and Tours

The cromlechs above the village can be visited on a walk of about an hour from the village. The tombs at the cromlechs in the Espiau massif date from between 3000 and 2000 BC. If you are interested in the archaeological side of Saint-Aventin, this is a good reason to combine a visit to the landscape with a look at its early history.

For mountain biking, the Tour du Plateau de Superbagnères is a difficult circular route: it is 14.8 kilometers long, has 534 meters of elevation gain, and starts and ends in Superbagnères. The Skirando-Marmottes ski touring route is of moderate difficulty, 3.42 kilometers long, and has 650 meters of elevation gain; it starts in Saint-Aventin and is also a loop. Skirando-Panoramique is described as easy and offers views of the highest peaks of the Pyrenees.

Another option is the waymarked GR10 hiking trail. It starts on the Superbagnères plateau and heads toward the ridges. The activities and difficulty ratings vary among the routes described: mountain biking, ski touring and hiking each have their own stated difficulty levels. Check current route conditions before setting out, as they can change.

A Break in Superbagnères

La Chapelle in Superbagnères is a restored former chapel that now operates as a mountain restaurant with a panoramic terrace. If you plan to stop there, check its current opening status and whether the terrace is available before your visit.
