Rieumes can be explored through two distinct themes: architectural history and green trails. Saint-Gilles Church and the Halle aux marchands offer concrete architectural points of interest; west of the village lies the 379-hectare Rieumes Forest. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Rieumes, you can plan your trip around whether architectural history, woodland activities or a combination of both is your main focus.

Architectural History in Different Forms

Saint-Gilles Church was built in 1525 by Toulouse master masons Privat and Monestié. Its features include a single-nave brick body and a wall bell tower. The side chapels contain painted wooden altarpieces dating from 1660 and 1661. An altarpiece is a decorative structure behind the altar, and therefore a distinct part of the church’s furnishings. The church also has a 19th-century Cavaillé-Coll organ. Saint-Gilles thus offers different ways to consider its architectural form and furnishings separately.

The Halle aux marchands offers a different architectural feature. Antoine Cambon built it between 1822 and 1825 in the Neoclassical style; it has 22 round-arched arcades. The dates make clear the difference in age between the hall and Saint-Gilles Church, built in 1525. By decree of 11 October 2004, the hall was listed as a historic monument; its more recent metal closures are excluded.

The present-day Chapelle de l’Ormette also has its own construction timeline: its foundation stone was blessed in 1863, and it was completed in 1868. Its features include a wall bell tower and an interior in the Saint-Sulpice style. The Marroule windmill offers another perspective on Rieumes’ architectural history: it is a brick mill dating from the 1850s. The chapel and mill therefore broaden the focus beyond churches and market halls.

Forest, Trails and Different Excursions

Rieumes Forest lies west of the village and covers 379 hectares. It is located in the area historically known as “Gratecuq”. The forest trails are suitable for hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking. This offers several ways to get active in the landscape, without limiting your interests to just one type of trail.

The Tour de Rieumes lets you discover the village and its history in a green, natural setting. It starts at the village water tower, completed in 1896 and topped with a stone bas-relief bearing Rieumes’ coat of arms. The Lac de la Bure is also nearby, between Rieumes and Poucharramet. The Sentier de randonnée des Hospitaliers runs along the lake. The two routes have different focuses: the Tour de Rieumes connects the village with its history, while the Sentier follows the lakeshore. The GR 86 is another local trail, crossing forests and streams in the area around Rieumes.

For a nature stay in Rieumes Forest, Ferme du Paradis offers educational and entertaining activities. Tépacap is located on the D3, route de l’Isle en Dodon, in 31370 Rieumes. It has 17 courses for climbing adventures in the forest; the activities on offer may change. The two named woodland attractions therefore offer different experiences: Ferme du Paradis is for a nature stay, while Tépacap offers climbing courses.
