A 12th-century Romanesque church and a natural glacial lake give a trip based in Oô two distinct cultural and landscape highlights. The cultural history spans the Way of St James and a pastoral tradition; Lac d’Oô adds a focus on nature. Before looking for accommodation, decide whether historic sites and customs or the lake and a hike should shape your trip.

Church, pilgrimage route and cultural heritage

The Église Saint-Jacques d’Oô is a 12th-century Romanesque church. When it was built, Oô was a stop on the Way of St James. The church contains a polychrome Baroque altarpiece from the 17th century. The contrast between the Romanesque construction period and the later, multicoloured furnishings highlights two distinct periods in art history without confusing their dates.

The Tour à signaux dite Le Castet has been listed as a historic monument since 11 April 1950. The date 11 April 1950 refers to when it was listed, not necessarily when it was built.

At the Chapelle d’Astau, a different story takes centre stage: during its restoration in the 1960s, it was decorated by icon painter Nicolas Greschny. A mass to bless the flocks is held there in mid-June. Shepherds and breeders gather then to move their livestock up to the summer pastures; the occasion links a religious celebration with the pastoral calendar. If you want your trip to include this tradition, plan for mid-June and check the specific event date in advance.

A copy of the Pierre d’Oô is kept at the Musée du Pays de Luchon. If you want to combine your trip with a possible museum visit, check in advance whether the copy is currently on display; exhibition arrangements may change.

Lac d’Oô: glacial lake and waterfall

Lac d’Oô is a natural glacial lake at an altitude of 1,507 m. In France, it has been classified in the Grands Paysages category since May 1927. There is also a 275 m waterfall at the lake. Its glacial origin, altitude and waterfall are three distinct features that shape the landscape.

From the Granges d’Astau, you can reach the lake on foot in under an hour. Check seasonal trail conditions before setting out; walking time and trail conditions are two separate planning considerations. Walking time helps you estimate how long the route takes; plan your time at the lake separately.

Include dates in your travel plans

The trail-running event also has a limited planning horizon: the Association Trail du Lac d’Oô was founded in 2023 to ensure the event continues over the long term and to offer several distances. If you are planning your trip around a race, check the dates, which must be confirmed each year, before booking.
