Montastruc-La-Conseillère is a small bastide on a promontory, with distinctive cultural and hiking themes. When planning your trip, it is worth exploring the town’s history and music as well as the GR46 long-distance trail and the Boucle des Coteaux.

Bastide and historic townscape

Narrow streets, half-timbered houses and the use of brick shape the historic townscape. The local architecture is arranged around squares and public spaces; as you explore, you can also appreciate the connection between the houses and these shared places. The historic heritage also includes châteaux and manor houses, which bear witness to Montastruc-La-Conseillère’s former prosperity.

Information panels cover various places and topics in the municipality: the town hall, the church, squares, a street, a relay station and a distillery. This broadens the focus beyond individual buildings to include different aspects of local life. Anyone interested in the town’s historical and architectural development will find several points of interest here, each linked to a specific place or topic.

Organ history and music

The church of Saint-Barthélemy houses an organ built by Théodore Puget in 1874. It was inaugurated on 1 August 1886. The year it was built and the date of its inauguration mark two separate stages in its history: the organ builder’s name is associated with the first date, and the inauguration with the second.

The Fête de la Musique also offers a way to experience local culture. The MJC has organized it for more than a decade. More than 100 musicians and singers of all ages and musical genres come together for the event. Thus, a historic instrument in the church and a recurring music event featuring a wide range of participants represent different aspects of musical life.

A stop at the town hall square and a visit to the church are recommended on a pilgrimage route. If you plan to visit the church, check access in advance, as access arrangements may vary.

Long-distance trail and circular route

The Conques–Toulouse long-distance trail, the GR46, passes through Montastruc-La-Conseillère and forms part of the connecting route between the Via Podiensis and the Via Tolosana. The train stations in the town centre can also serve as starting points for the GR46. The Boucle des Coteaux de Montastruc-la-Conseillère has a different focus: it starts at Place Sant Péré Pescador on the upper esplanade and follows sunken lanes and ridge paths. Its viewpoints offer views of surrounding villages and natural landscapes.

The two hiking routes therefore differ mainly in character: the GR46 focuses on the connection between two pilgrimage routes, while the Boucle is a circular trail with a designated starting point and viewpoints. Another route detail concerns the nature trail in the Coteaux du Girou area: the section there is 33 km long and passes through eight municipalities, including Montastruc-La-Conseillère. On the way to Montastruc-La-Conseillère, panels installed by the ABC de la Biodiversité can also be found along the nature interpretation trail. Before setting out, check train connections, trail conditions, waymarking and current route information; also check locally for information about the panels along the nature trail.
