Loubens-Lauragais brings together a range of cultural and historical themes and two different ways to experience the surrounding area: a walking route through the village centre and a route from Loubens-Lauragais to Revel. There is one important restriction to keep in mind when planning: the château and its park are open to the public only during the European Heritage Days in September. Plan your visit for this period and check the visiting arrangements before you travel.

Château and park: history with limited visiting hours

The Château de Loubens was built in the 16th century. Most of the main building has been preserved. Two round towers flank it to the north, while a former scaligérien-style hexagonal tower stands to the south. The château’s date of construction and surviving architecture are both defining aspects of its history. It is partly listed as a Monument historique and partly classified as a Monument historique; protection also applies only in part.

The park covers four hectares and is classified as a “Jardin Remarquable de France.” For planning purposes, the monument status and public opening hours should be considered separately: the château and park are not accessible at all times, but are open to the public only during the European Heritage Days in September. If this visit is important to your trip, check the visiting arrangements for the relevant dates in advance.

Church and market hall: former uses and interior

The tower of the church in Loubens-Lauragais contains three rooms that once housed archives and a lookout. Inside the church are grisaille paintings, restored by Vialaret around 1950. These are distinct features: the rooms’ former use in the tower and the church interior’s design. Those interested in architecture will find different historical points of interest here than at the château.

The market hall in Loubens-Lauragais also tells of past uses. It once housed a large market where many farmers gathered, and it also formerly served as a prison. These two functions offer a different focus from the château’s architecture: here, the story is about the former market and a very different use of the building. The market hall’s history can thus be considered in terms of trade and confinement, without conflating its two former uses with a present-day function.

Village centre, mill site and routes

The site of the Loubens-Lauragais mill is located on a former motte castrale. This connection between the mill site and the former location of a castle mound adds a link to the historic landscape to the village’s history.

The “La boucle des deux châteaux” walking route passes through a narrow, partly covered lane in the centre of Loubens-Lauragais. Check the route and access before setting out. The “Paysages du Lauragais” route offers a different focus: it leads from Loubens-Lauragais to Revel through fields and rolling hills, with beautiful viewpoints along the way. Check road conditions before setting out. The two routes therefore differ clearly in their described courses: one goes through a lane in the village centre, while the other heads towards Revel through a landscape of fields and hills.

This gives you a practical choice between local history and a scenic route when planning your trip. If the château is of interest to you, plan your visit around its September opening. For a walk or the drive to Revel, choose the appropriate route and take into account the relevant access or road conditions.
