Karst formations, woodland paths and a manually played carillon give Aspet several distinct ways to explore. For planning, the hikes can be distinguished by landscape and theme: Granges et Prairies (1) combines woodland and meadows, the Sentier karstique de Saint Paul draws attention to geological formations, and La tour du Chucaou focuses on fauna and flora. A market, traditional woodworking and a cycling memorial site complement these nature themes.
Hiking trails: woodland, meadows and karst
The easy Granges et Prairies (1) hike for everyone starts in Aspet at the stadium, to the left of the tennis courts. It has an elevation gain of 200 metres and first leads through the Bois de la Rouère, with box trees, chestnut trees and oaks. The route then reaches the meadows of Gèles, where barns in varying states of disrepair are scattered about. Woodland and meadows are the defining landscape features of this hike.
The Sentier karstique de Saint Paul starts in Aspet at the Bois Perché leisure centre. The hike takes two hours and is suitable for all visitor groups. Along a difference in elevation of just under 60 metres, you can discover cavities and sinkholes. Compared with Granges et Prairies, the focus here is on karst formations rather than the transition between woodland and meadows.
The La tour du Chucaou (13) nature trail invites you to discover trees, animals and landscapes around the commune of Aspet. Around 30 information panels present the area’s fauna and flora. The trail thus complements the two hikes with its own focus on nature: rather than a described route through woodland and meadows or a geological discovery, the focus here is on animals, plants and the landscape.
Carillon, market and woodworking
The carillon of the Church of Saint-Martin d’Aspet is a manually played instrument with 16 bells (1823–2002). It is located in the bell tower, the former keep of the fortified old town. The instrument connects a specific place in Aspet with the musical tradition of the carillon.
At the Aspet market, you can hear the bells of the carillon on Wednesday and Saturday mornings in the Place de la République and the adjoining lanes in the heart of the mountains. They are played by a professional carillonneur. On these mornings, a visit to the market and the carillon are part of a shared cultural experience.
The Maison du Bois in Aspet displays more than 300 tools from traditional woodworking trades, as well as works by Benoit Obrador. Those interested in crafts will find another insight into local cultural offerings here, alongside the hiking and nature themes. The exhibition content may change.
At the foot of the Col de Portet d’Aspet, a stele commemorates Italian cyclist Fabio Casartelli. He suffered a fatal crash on the descent during the Tour in 1995. The stele preserves the event in local remembrance culture.
