For a stay focused on Toujouse, cultural history and nature can be explored as distinct themes: the Église de Toujouse tells the story of several building phases, while the visitor route at the Musée du Paysan Gascon covers crafts and agriculture. Other highlights include the history of the Arènes, protected areas in the Midou and Ludon network, and a circular walk with a stated duration.

A church with several building phases

The Église de Toujouse is protected as an “inscrit MH” (listed historic monument); it was designated by decree on 30 January 1973. Its building history goes back to Romanesque origins. After being looted during the Wars of Religion in 1569, the church was extensively altered in the 16th century. The south portal is designed in the Renaissance style, while the bell tower stands apart from the church building. The church is built almost entirely of flat tiles. A Renaissance-style door leads into the square bell tower. Its Romanesque beginnings, later alterations and Renaissance features make for a richly layered architectural story.

Gascon culture at the museum and the Arènes

The visitor route at the Musée du Paysan Gascon covers craft skills, wine culture, the history of agriculture and traditional Gascon homes. The museum brings together different aspects of rural life rather than focusing on a single craft or period. Throughout the year, it offers workshops, meetings with craftspeople, Gascon evenings, traditional dances and concerts featuring polyphonic singing. Individual events may vary. If you are planning to attend a particular evening or concert, check the dates in advance.

The Arènes de Toujouse also have their own building history: 144 volunteers from three départements built them between 1999 and 2001 using many reused materials. They hosted the Coupe de France des cadrilla. Several Courses landaises are also held there every year. The Arènes thus play different roles in the local cultural offering, through both their construction history and recurring events.

Protected areas and a circular walk

Toujouse is part of the Réseau hydrographique du Midou et du Ludon Natura 2000 site, considered highly important for the protection of the European mink. The Réseau hydrographique du Midou et milieux annexes ZNIEFF area includes Toujouse, as well as the main channel of the Midou, its main tributaries, ponds, wet meadows and riverside forests. These protected-area designations give nature enthusiasts a specific focus on local waterways and habitats.

For a planned hike, the moderately difficult Las Carrères de Toujouse circular walk has a clearly stated timeframe: it is 12 kilometres long and takes about three hours. Along the way, the route passes the village cross, the church, the Théâtre de verdure and the Arènes. These stops bring together different local themes on a single circular route; the moderate difficulty and approximate duration are also useful for planning. Check local route information before setting out.
