Saint-Maur combines a surviving fragment of an 11th-century abbey church with a designated cycling route that passes through the village. An ancient castrum, a monastery that existed by the 12th century at the latest, and a monument are also historical points of reference. This gives you two distinct focuses for planning your trip: exploring the village’s cultural heritage and taking a longer bike ride.

Church and Monastery History

Saint-Maur-Soulès was built on the site of an ancient castrum. A monastery founded by the Counts of Astarac existed in Saint-Maur by the 12th century at the latest and later became dependent on Saint-Pé-de-Bigorre Abbey. The Church of Saint-Maur preserves part of the original 11th-century abbey church. The castrum, monastery and church ruins point to different aspects of the village’s history: its ancient settlement site, monastic development and architectural history.

The church’s history also has a distinct connection to a later period. In the 19th century, a crypt in the church housed a throne-shaped tomb containing the relics of Saint Maurus. The church therefore brings together two distinct historical periods: the surviving part of the original 11th-century abbey church and the 19th-century crypt and tomb. The surviving fragment and the tomb each provide a tangible architectural or historical reference point for the church’s history.

Monument and Getting Around the Village

The Saint-Maur-Soulès monument is in the village centre and commemorates the ambush of 8 June and the resistance fighters who were killed. It is a separate memorial site alongside the church and monastery history. The church and monument represent different historical themes: the church recalls the abbey’s history, while the monument commemorates the Resistance.

The church is in the heart of the village. Parking is available near the monument. Check the parking information again before your visit. These location details help you distinguish between the church and the memorial site as you find your way around the village.

Osse Valley and Cycling Route

Saint-Maur lies above the Osse Valley, in a landscape of rolling hills. This setting adds a geographical perspective to the historical periods: the valley and hills define the surroundings, while the church, monastery and monument identify the village’s cultural heritage. The landscape and the village’s history thus offer two different ways of looking at Saint-Maur.

The “Saint-Loup où es-tu?” loop route is 65.0 km long and passes through Saint-Maur. It is designated for cycling, including cycling with electric assistance. The distance is for the entire loop, not just the section through the village. If you include the route in your travel plans, check the route details before setting off. This makes it easy to consider the bike ride as a separate focus alongside the historic sites.
