Saint-Léonard can be explored through several themes: its fortified centre and architectural history, the natural landscape of the Cours de l’Arrats, and a moderately challenging circuit for electric-assisted cycling. This gives you a clear choice when planning your trip: should local history, the river landscape or an E-bike tour be the deciding factor?

Castelnau, Château and church architecture

The centre of Saint-Léonard is a former Castelnau with surviving fortifications. The Château de Saint-Léonard, with its barn and chapel, was listed as a historic monument by decree of 3 June 1996. The former parish church stood within the enclosure and was destroyed by fire in 1870; the present-day parish church of Saint-Léonard was built around 1876. Only a few years separate the destruction of the former church from the construction of the present one. The two church periods can therefore be placed in chronological order without conflating them: the older building within the enclosure and the present-day parish church from the late 19th century.

The Cours de l’Arrats as a natural landscape

Saint-Léonard is part of the 814.96-hectare ZNIEFF de type 2 “Cours de l’Arrats”. The natural corridor encompasses the river itself, riverside woodland and flood-prone areas of the valley floor. This means the landscape extends beyond the watercourse to include wooded banks and floodplain areas. One distinctive natural feature is the rare, nationally protected Roman hyacinth (Bellevalia romana). A nature conservation description dated 12 June 2024 notes several occurrences in the Cours de l’Arrats corridor; along the river, they are among the most significant in the département. The species is a notable part of this natural landscape, but a sighting during your visit at a particular time of year is not guaranteed.

Saint-Léonard on the VAE circuit

The “Entre Arratz et Auroue en VAE” route is a 30-kilometre, moderately challenging circuit for electric-assisted cycling. Saint-Léonard is at kilometre 20. This marks the town’s position on the circuit; 30 kilometres is the total length of the route. The circuit is not signposted and follows paved surfaces such as asphalt, concrete or decking. When planning, consider not only the distance but also the difficulty, lack of waymarks and surface. The Saint-Léonard stop also has a pretty wooden market hall. This information helps you consider the cycling circuit as an activity in its own right and see a visit to the town as part of it.

A local report dated 24 July 2024 described a walk through woodland and paths in the surrounding countryside to “Le Moulin”, where the group stopped for refreshments. This dated example describes a specific outing on foot and adds another perspective to the local history and nature themes.
