The Étang du Pesqué and its nature trail make Perchède a destination for nature-focused outings. The Église Saint-Martin and Château des Pesquidoux add clearly distinct aspects of the area’s architectural and local history. You can plan your trip around an interest in nature, cultural heritage, or a mix of both.
Nature and trails at the Étang du Pesqué
The Étang du Pesqué and its woodland are designated as ZNIEFF and Espaces naturels sensibles and are part of the Midou-Ludon Natura 2000 network. If the current protection status is important to you, check the entries in the official registers. The pond was created in the 13th century by monks from Saint-Mont, so its history is as much a part of the area as the nature visitors find there today.
A network of nature and educational trails at the Étang features three themed routes. One interpretation trail covers fauna and flora, how ponds in the Armagnac region work, cultivated woodland, fish farming, and migratory birds. The topics range from wildlife and plants to the uses and workings of the pond landscape. If you’re interested in observing nature, you’ll find different points of interest here than with geocaching or cycling.
The Sentier nature du Pesqué is just over 4 kilometers long. It includes a mountain-bike and e-mountain-bike loop. With geocaching at the Étang, you can use a smartphone or GPS device to discover hidden markers and explore the area and the commune of Perchède in a different way. Each activity has a different focus: the nature trail offers a themed experience, the loop provides a cycling option, and geocaching involves searching for hidden markers.
There is a car park and picnic area at the Étang. Check the local conditions before your visit. An 8-hectare park can also be visited in Perchède.
Church, bell, and château
The Église Saint-Martin is a 15th-century Gothic church that has been renovated several times. Its bell tower stands on a square tower, is about 20 meters high, and is considered the most spectacular part of the church. It is said to have originally been a defensive tower. The original bronze bell has a remarkable history: it weighs 350 kilograms, survived the French Revolution, and is still kept in the bell tower.
The Château des Pesquidoux also brings together several periods. It is designed in the style of Louis XIII and was expanded in the 18th century. The de Pesquidoux family has lived in the château for generations. Joseph de Pesquidoux owned the Château de Perchède and is considered an unmistakably Gascon author. Architecture, family history, and literary connections offer different ways to explore local history.
Which interests suit your trip?
If you’d like to focus on nature, the Étang, woodland, and themes of the interpretation trail offer a clear starting point. If you’re more interested in architectural history, you can explore the church, its bell, and the château. Perchède has something for different interests, without requiring you to focus on just one aspect of the area.
