Montesquiou can be discovered through several different experiences: the Église Saint-Martin brings together architectural history, late Gothic features and works of art from the 16th century; beside Lac du Lizet there is a 1.9-kilometre fitness trail. The market and festivals add further dates throughout the year. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on historical details, exercise by the lake or a particular local event.

The Église Saint-Martin: architectural history and art

The Église Saint-Martin de Montesquiou is on the Way of St James and dates back to at least the 11th century. The central choir and the two side chapels are late Gothic, dating from the end of the 15th century. The right-hand chapel contains a 16th-century Pietà and a gilded reliquary of Saint Martin. The church thus brings together several periods: its origins, the late Gothic design of the choir and side chapels, and the works of art from the 16th century. Those interested in architectural history will therefore find not just a single date, but a range of historical connections in one building.

Gate tower and cemetery chapel

The Tour-porte is one of the oldest gate towers in the Gers and offers an impressive panorama towards the Pyrenees. The Chapelle du cimetière has a different historical connection: it was built in 1820 as an addition to the new cemetery, which opened in 1816. The chapel is open every year during the European Heritage Days. If you are planning a visit for this occasion, check the relevant event dates. The church, gate tower and chapel thus represent different aspects of the town’s history: religious architecture, a historic gate tower with views of the Pyrenees, and a 19th-century cemetery chapel.

Exercise at Lac du Lizet

The fitness trail at Lac du Lizet is 1.9 kilometres long and runs along the shore of the lake in a Natura 2000 protected area. It offers a range of levels: an easy section suitable for families alongside more challenging sports stations. This makes it easier to assess the trail’s character in detail, rather than describing the entire route as either easy or challenging. For choosing an outing, the trail offers a different focus from the historic sites: here, the emphasis is on exercise by the lake and stations of varying difficulty.

Markets and festivals throughout the year

The Thursday evening market in Montesquiou brings local producers together. A special date is the Pouloïo: since 1850, it has brought the whole village together for a large banquet on the first Sunday in November. In July, a native local cattle breed is celebrated as part of the Fête de la Madeleine. These events differ both in timing and character: an evening market on Thursday, a November banquet and a July celebration of a local cattle breed. If you want to plan your trip around a particular date, check the current calendar for the market and events. This lets you choose your travel dates according to your interests, without treating the market visit, festival and historic town visit as a single itinerary item.
