Miradoux brings together three themes for an exploration: the history of the bastide and other buildings, the nativity scene trail in December, and views across the Gers countryside. Each of these highlights offers a different perspective. Would you like to focus mainly on the town’s development, experience a seasonal event, or take in the landscape?

The Bastide and Architectural History

The bastide of Miradoux dates back to the 12th century and developed further in the first half of the 13th century. It was finally fortified at the beginning of the 14th century. Its origins, subsequent development and fortification therefore represent distinct historical stages. To understand the town’s history, it is important to consider not just a single founding date, but this sequence of events as well.

The Church of Saint-Orens and Saint-Louis appears to have been built on the remains of a building dating from the second half of the 13th century. It has been protected as a historic monument since 1978. Its presumed earlier history and its precisely dated protected status therefore provide two different points of reference.

The Château de Fieux is located in the Fieux district of Miradoux and was rebuilt in the third quarter of the 19th century. On the GR® 65 section of the Way of St James near Miradoux, it is described as a Renaissance-style building. Its style and the date of its rebuilding offer two different ways of understanding the château: one identifies its style, while the other dates the reconstruction. The market hall in Miradoux is also worth seeing.

Landscape and Views

At Point du Jour in Miradoux, an orientation table offers views over the valleys of the Arratz and the Auroue. From the orientation table in Miradoux, the view extends across the Gers countryside to the horizon. Alongside the town’s architectural history, this offers a landscape perspective centred on the named valleys and sweeping views. When choosing the focus of your trip, you can consider this viewpoint as a distinct highlight alongside the historical sites.

The Ronde des Crèches in December

Miradoux and its canton hold the Ronde des Crèches every year in December. The trail features nine themed nativity scenes, which can be visited by day and at night. The number of scenes and their themes give the trail its distinctive character; the visiting hours also offer both a daytime and a nighttime view of the same tradition. Unlike the history of the bastide, the Ronde takes place during a recurring period of the year.

When looking for hotels in Miradoux, it helps to decide first what brings you on your trip: will the nativity scene trail be your main focus, or are you more interested in the town’s history and the view from Point du Jour? You can then choose your travel dates to suit your interests.
