West of the Église Saint-Martin, high earthworks and an eroded platform mark the former castle settlement of Lagarde-Hachan, which was first mentioned in 1210. This historic trace lies in the landscape and provides a point of reference of its own alongside the architectural history of the churches.

Historic Traces at the Église Saint-Martin

The Église Saint-Martin dates back to an original sanctuary mentioned in 1265 and associated with the former Château de La Garde-Noble. The south portal is dated 1758 and bears the Latin inscription “Domus mea, domus orationis est”. Inside, the church preserves Baroque statues, monumental religious paintings, a Neo-Gothic pulpit and a precious monstrance. The early references and the portal point to different parts of the history: 1265 marks the mention of the sanctuary, while 1758 is the date of the architectural feature.

The Chapelle Saint-Germier de Hachan

The Chapelle Saint-Germier de Hachan also brings together different periods. It preserves medieval architectural elements, including a stone bell gable, and was extensively remodeled in the 17th century. The baptismal font also dates from that century; the furnishings also include gilded altarpieces, religious paintings and a reliquary bust of Saint Germier. The chapel was once a recognized place of devotion. Many pilgrims came there to ask Saint Germier to heal sick children. The architectural features and former devotional practices each offer their own historical points of reference.

Hilltop Setting and Walks

Lagarde-Hachan is situated on a hill between the rivers Sousson and Petite BaĂŻse. The countryside between the rivers is well suited to family walks. In clear weather, views of the Pyrenees can be enjoyed from Lagarde-Hachan. This means you can choose between focusing on churches and heritage or spending time in the countryside. Views of the Pyrenees are dependent on clear weather.

A more specific hiking option is the Sentier du Bois du Cerf: this circular route is 12.7 km long, starts at Lagarde-Hachan town hall and follows small roads and paths through the countryside. Its defined circular route and stated length set this hike apart from a general walk. Check current access and trail conditions before setting out.

Geocaching and Local History

Geocaching offers another way to explore Lagarde-Hachan. There are caches in the commune that you can find using GPS, containing information about the commune, its history and its heritage. Unlike the architectural history of the churches, this activity combines a search with information about different aspects of the area. Check in advance whether the caches are currently available.
