Courties combines a distinctive location with a rich architectural history: the small Church of Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens is a prominent part of its heritage, while its dispersed settlement pattern contributes to the character of the village. The Lys Valley, panoramic views of the Pyrenees and the Route des Bastides et Castelnaux provide several specific geographical reference points.

Landscape and location

To the south, Courties overlooks the Lys Valley; the commune also offers panoramic views of the Pyrenees mountain range. The valley and the mountain range provide distinct landscape settings. The settlement pattern of Courties is highly dispersed. Alongside its landscape, this spatial distribution is part of the commune’s character.

The Route des Bastides et Castelnaux provides another geographical point of reference. Courties lies on the ridgeline of this route, between Beaumarchès and Armous-et-Cau. Its location can therefore be described in terms of both the ridgeline and the two villages along the route.

The Church of Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens

The small Church of Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens is the foremost feature of Courties’ heritage. It has a rectangular floor plan; its three-bay nave ends in a flat chancel, pierced by a Gothic opening. The three bays divide the nave into sections before the chancel completes the building. The octagonal bell tower, roofed with slate, was built in 1734. The rectangular floor plan and octagonal tower set two different geometric forms alongside one another.

The materials also vary from one part of the building to another. The church has a poplar-panelled ceiling and a terracotta-tiled floor. Slate covers the bell tower; the roofs of the nave, sacristy, Marian chapel and porch are tiled. During restoration work, these roof surfaces and the ceiling were completely renewed. The commune decided to proceed with the restoration in 2023. The southern porch leads into a former classroom.

Church, abbey and brickworks

The church’s existence is documented from the late 13th century; in 1274, Lacaze-Dieu Abbey acquired the place of worship. This provides another specifically dated medieval reference point. A different historical trace leads to the 19th century, when the forests and clay soils of Courties made it possible to establish two brickworks. The church and the brickworks represent different aspects of the village’s history: its medieval ecclesiastical connection to the abbey, and the use of forest resources and clay for brick production in the 19th century. The building’s history links the medieval church with the construction of its tower in 1734 and the later renewal of the roof surfaces and ceiling.

If you are considering Courties as a travel destination, you can weigh its landscape and architectural history as distinct highlights. The Lys Valley and panoramic views of the Pyrenees sit alongside the church as a specific cultural landmark; the route and dispersed settlement pattern add to the geographical picture.
