Caussens is known as a village stretching across the landscape, with sweeping views to the north and south. Its architectural history also offers several tangible points of interest: remains of the fortification walls survive from the former castle, while the church’s orientation and the material of its portal shape its appearance. Lac du Bousquetara adds a natural dimension: the lake and its wetland are well suited to a walk, while the Tour du Bousquetara PR® No. 20 offers a clearly defined circular route. This makes it possible to plan a stay around local history, the landscape and a specific outdoor walk.

Wall Remains, Portal and Bell Tower

Today, only remnants of the fortification walls remain from the former castle of Caussens. At Mons, near Caussens, a 13th-century fortress was converted into a castle in the 14th century. These two stories refer to different places: the wall remains belong to Caussens’ former castle, while the conversion from fortress to castle took place at Mons. This keeps the historical points of reference distinct rather than combining them into a single complex.

The entrance to Caussens church is on the northwest side, beneath a large portal made of large blocks of limestone. Another historical point of interest is the original bell tower of Saint-Gilles, which has been preserved. It houses a 16th-century spiral staircase and two bells, one of which dates to 1636. At the church, its orientation and stone construction stand out; at the bell tower, the staircase and bells are specific details of its architectural and furnishing history. These different features give visitors more than a single date by which to place the buildings’ history.

Panoramic Views and a Walk at Lac du Bousquetara

Lac du Bousquetara and its wetland are well suited to a walk in nature. If you are looking for a route with a stated distance and duration, consider the Tour du Bousquetara PR® No. 20: it is an easy 4.2-kilometre circular trail, takes one hour and starts at the lake’s car park in Caussens-la Fromagère. A walk by the lake and wetland, on the one hand, and the named circular route with its set duration, on the other, are different ways to spend time outdoors.

Fishing at Lac du Bousquetara is subject to a specific rule: it is prohibited from the dam. If you are planning a fishing trip, also check the applicable local rules.

Regional Cuisine at Au Vieux Pressoir

The Au Vieux Pressoir restaurant in Caussens serves homemade regional cuisine and places particular emphasis on produce from local producers. Its menu includes products made from the milk of buffalo kept at a neighbouring family farm, as well as duck dishes. These details give the cuisine specific points of reference: alongside its regional character, the menu features both a buffalo-milk product and a named dish. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider local cuisine as a focus in its own right, alongside the landscape and architectural history.
