For a stay in Bassoues, its architectural history, Saint-Fris and a walk to the lake offer different ways to explore the area. There are also tours focused on wine and Armagnac. Those looking to include culture, outdoor activities or tastings in their trip will find several specific themes here; there is no set order to follow.

The keep and churches: architectural history in Bassoues

The Donjon de Bassoues was built from 1368 to 1371 under the direction of Arnaud Aubert, Cardinal and Archbishop of Auch. In 1840, it was listed as a historic monument, becoming the first listed building in the Gers department. In clear weather, the view from the top stretches across the Gers countryside, the hills in the south of Gers and the Pyrenees. The keep thus brings together a precisely dated architectural history and a long-distance view that depends on clear weather. Its listing came centuries later.

The Basilique Saint-Fris was built over the tomb of Saint Fris. The church was a pilgrimage site from the outset and also has a crypt. Around 1520, the basilica was restored and gained two Renaissance-style portals, one on the west side and one on the south side. Its pilgrimage history and a specific period in its architectural history offer different ways of looking at the building: its religious significance and the later design of its portals.

The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary was listed in its entirety as a historic monument by decree dated 13 September 2018. The protection therefore covers the whole church.

Walk to the Chapelle Saint-Fris

La randonnée de Saint-Fris is 5.6 kilometres long and suitable for beginners. The walk starts at the market hall in the centre of Bassoues and follows the lakeshore to the Chapelle Saint-Fris. The route therefore links a clearly identified starting point with a destination and a stretch alongside the water. Its length and difficulty rating can help you decide whether this walk fits your travel plans. Trail conditions and signage may change; check conditions before setting out.

Tours featuring wine and Armagnac

Domaine de Bilé offers tours of the vineyards, the Armagnac ageing cellars and the wine-making cellars. Each stop has a different focus: the tour goes from the vineyard to the areas where Armagnac is aged and wine is made. In 2026, the visitor offer includes a free tasting of Côtes de Gascogne, Floc de Gascogne and vintage Armagnac at the end of the tour. Check booking details for the season before your visit.
