Get to know Villeneuve from two perspectives: churches, frescoes and guided tours give a visit to the town a cultural focus, while trails across the Causse lead through a landscape of stony heath and low-growing oak forests. There are also historical traces on a smaller scale. As you plan, you can decide whether to focus mainly on sightseeing or set aside more time for the landscape.

Churches, Frescoes and Sightseeing

The Church of Saint-Sépulcre combines Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles; its floor plan is inspired by the Basilica of Jerusalem. The church contains 14th-century wall paintings. One of the frescoes depicts the “Pendu Dépendu” scene, which is associated with the pilgrimage to Compostela. Architecture, painting and pilgrimage come together here in one specific place.

Saint-Sépulcre is included in classic, sensory and nighttime guided tours. Other guided tours in Villeneuve cover the Sauveté, the bastide and the historic church, with its Romanesque and Gothic elements and 14th-century frescoes. You can choose between a visit focused on the church and a tour that takes in several parts of the historic town.

The Church of Saint-Pierre et Saint-Paul in Toulongergues has its own visiting hours: guided tours are available in summer and during the European Heritage Days. In July and August, a tour takes place every Wednesday at 3 p.m. If you plan to attend, check the time before your visit.

Photography and Industrial Heritage

The Jean-Marie Périer Gallery features a permanent exhibition of 200 photographs. A one-hour film about the photographer’s personal life is also shown there. The gallery is housed in a 14th-century medieval building that was formerly called Maison du Mazel. A visit therefore brings together the photographs and a building whose former name has also been preserved.

The Circuit des fours à chaux trail offers a different perspective on the town’s history. It leads to former lime kilns in Villeneuve, which are part of the town’s industrial heritage. This themed trail has a different focus from the church tours: here, the former lime kilns and their connection to the town’s history take centre stage.

Trails and Landscape on the Causse

The Causse de Villeneuve offers stony heath and low-growing oak forests. Sights to explore include dolmens, caselles and a dovecote. The landscape thus combines open natural areas with small historic structures and archaeological sites. This is a different way to experience Villeneuve from a visit focused on interiors, paintings and guided tours.

The Chemin des caselles starts in the town centre and follows typical trails across the Causse, lined with dry-stone walls. The GR62B variant of the Way of St James connects Conques with Toulouse and passes through the municipality of Villeneuve. The two route descriptions offer different points of orientation: the Chemin des caselles is characterised by its town-centre starting point and dry-stone walls, while the GR62B follows a longer pilgrimage route through the municipality.

Pilgrimage Connections and Travel Planning

The connection to pilgrimage is evident not only in the Saint-Sépulcre fresco scene and the route of the GR62B. Opened in 2018, the Maison des Pèlerins underscores Villeneuve’s importance as a key stop on the pilgrimage routes in question. The fresco scene is associated with the pilgrimage to Compostela; the GR62B connects Conques with Toulouse.

For a tour in Toulongergues, the day of the week and time are practical details to consider. The Chemin des caselles, by contrast, has a named starting point in the town centre and a described trail character. You can plan your trip around the topics that interest you most.
