Villefranche-De-Rouergue can be explored through its medieval town plan, sacred art and routes to the Aveyron. The town was founded in the 13th century as a medieval new town. This gives you a choice of different focuses for your trip: architecture and history, one of the routes described here, or the Thursday morning market.

Bastide, square and Aveyron

The bastide of Villefranche-De-Rouergue is laid out around a central square in a precise checkerboard pattern. The square forms the centre of this planned development. Another landmark in the townscape is the Pont des Consuls: the bridge spans the Aveyron and connects the bastide with the Faubourg de la République. A visitor route leads through the pedestrian streets down to the riverbanks. The bridge and route thus show two different connections to the Aveyron: the link between the bastide and the Faubourg, and the way down to the riverbank.

Sacred art and visits

In the Chapelle des Pénitents Noirs, a brightly painted wooden ceiling, a gilded altarpiece and six large paintings framed in plaster stucco define the interior. Visitors can use an explanatory leaflet, an audio guide and guided tours. There is also a nighttime flashlight tour and a puzzle game for children. These different formats offer different ways to engage with the artworks without requiring you to join a guided tour.

The Collégiale Notre-Dame is included in the guided tour of the old town offered by the tourist office. The cloister at the Chartreuse Saint-Sauveur is one of the largest in France. Audio guides, a treasure hunt, and guided visits during the day and at night are offered there. Audio guides and guided tours are therefore available at several of the places mentioned; the special formats—the flashlight tour and puzzle game at the chapel, and the treasure hunt at the Chartreuse—distinguish the offerings. Visiting times may vary; check the current schedule in advance.

Routes offering different perspectives

Villefranche-De-Rouergue lies on a variant of the Way of St. James. The section in question runs through Peyrusse-le-Roc, Villeneuve-d’Aveyron, Villefranche, Najac and Cordes-sur-Ciel. Check the route conditions before setting out. Another route description concerns the Stations of the Cross: it leads from the Faubourg d’Alzou via the Côte du Calvaire and the former Roman road to the chapels on Saint-Jean-d’Aigremont hill. While the Way of St. James variant lists a sequence of places, the Stations of the Cross describe a specific route from the Faubourg to the chapels.

Plan your market visit and arrival

The main market takes place on Thursday mornings at Place Notre-Dame, around the covered market hall and along Allées Aristide Briand. It offers local produce and specialities such as farçous, fouace, honey, cheese, charcuterie and farm eggs. The selection at individual stalls may vary.

Villefranche-De-Rouergue station is on the Toulouse–Figeac–Aurillac TER line; direct travel from Toulouse is possible. Check the timetable before your trip. When choosing a hotel, it is helpful to plan your stay around the visits you want to make and the Thursday morning market. As visiting times may change and the train timetable should also be taken into account, coordinate these timings before deciding on your travel dates.
