Salles-Courbatiès can be explored through several distinct themes: the village grew up around its castle, and parts of it were built over the watercourse on stone arches. The Marais de Montaris, Le Jardin de la Mothe, and hiking and cycling options add further points of interest. Whether you want to focus on architecture, nature or outdoor activities, you can explore these themes separately and plan your stay accordingly.

Castle history and stone arches

Salles-Courbatiès grew up around its castle from the 12th century onwards. This historical development links the history of the village with the castle, while the stone arches highlight a different architectural feature: parts of the village were built over the watercourse on these arches. The arches reflect the craftsmanship of earlier builders. Those interested in architectural history can compare the castle’s historical significance with this distinctive building method.

The Marais de Montaris

The 23-hectare Marais de Montaris comprises lowland marshes, ponds, reed beds, wet meadows and old stands of poplar trees. The marsh also contains the only population of the very rare plant Grande douve known in Occitania. Alongside the range of wetland habitats, this offers nature lovers a specific botanical point of interest.

Garden visit and audio experience

Le Jardin de la Mothe in Salles-Courbatiès is an English garden bearing the “Jardin Remarquable” label. When planning your visit, consider how you would like to explore it: self-guided visits are possible, while guided visits are available by appointment. If you prefer a guided tour, arrange it in advance; if you would rather explore independently, that option is also available. You can plan your garden visit as a guided or self-guided experience, depending on your preference.

A separate option is “Oreilles en balade,” a free audio experience for adults and children with seven listening stations. In 2026, the recordings can be accessed via QR codes on the signs on site. The seven stations give the listening experience a clear structure, and the recordings can be played directly from the signs.

Hiking trail and cycling loop

There are different route options for an active stay. Salles-Courbatiès has a signposted 18 km hiking trail, as well as a 15 km alternative. This one is three kilometres shorter, so you can choose according to your preferred distance. Check the trail markings on site. For cycling, the 21 km loop from Salles-Courbatiès to Villefranche-de-Rouergue passes through the landscapes of the Causses and by local architectural heritage. The hiking trail and cycling loop therefore differ both in mode of travel and in stated distance. Check route conditions before setting out.

A legend from local tradition

According to local tradition, the Tumulus de Courbatiers was created from a handful of earth that fell from a giant’s perforated shirt. As a legend, this story adds another perspective on local tradition to the history of the castle and its architecture.
