Sainte-Croix offers several things to enjoy during a stay: a fortified church with Romanesque architectural features, an observation tower, and trails through the countryside. If you are looking for accommodation in Sainte-Croix, you can consider whether architectural history or walking will be the focus of your trip. There are specific destinations and different ways to explore them for both interests.

Fortified church, tower, and historic traces

The fortified church of Sainte-Croix is one of four fortified churches in the Aveyron department. Its Gothic architecture also incorporates some reused Romanesque architectural features. The church and tower ensemble was designated a Monument historique in 1931. The history of the fortifications also includes two gates: one to the southeast and one to the northwest. Both remained in place until the 17th century.

The Tour de Sainte-Croix is reached by a staircase with 120 steps. From the tower, there is a 360° panorama of the surrounding countryside and beyond. When planning your visit, you can take the climb into account as a specific part of this destination.

The former priory is also part of the town's history; today, it serves as the town hall. Its surviving features include windows, a door, and small arcades dating from the 14th century. The ground floor is currently used as an exhibition space. If you would like to visit this part of the town hall, check its availability before your trip.

Walking trails and an audio walk

Three marked walking trails start in Sainte-Croix. They are 4.5 km, 5 km, and 7 km long. Their different lengths make it easy to distinguish between the three trails. These details provide a practical guide if you would like to include a walk in your travel plans.

Oreilles en balade offers another way to discover Sainte-Croix. This audio walk has six stops and is available in a version for adults and a version for children. QR codes on signs around the village provide access to the audio recordings. Unlike the marked walking trails, this experience focuses on audio content at each stop.

When it was inaugurated in October 2022, the Sentier découverte was presented as a 9 km walking loop. It starts at the garden in front of Sainte-Croix town hall and returns there, connects Sainte-Croix, Marin, and Cénac, and passes through Palayret in the commune of Martiel. At the inauguration, the loop was described as accessible to everyone, with no particular difficulties or strenuous climbs. Twelve information panels along the trail were noted for explaining geological, botanical, and cultural and historical features. Check the current signs on site before setting out.

Landscape and character of the village

The commune's landscape includes pastureland, bocage hedgerows, and cultivated fields. Here, the term bocage refers to a landscape shaped by hedgerows; it adds another type of landscape to the open pastures and fields. Together with the church, tower, and trails, this offers a choice between architectural history, a panorama from the Tour, and different ways to explore on foot.
