Three distinct ways to explore Saint-Jean-et-Saint-Paul stand out: the history of the Fort of Saint-Jean-d'Alcas, the botanical heritage associated with Hippolyte Coste, and walks through the Causses landscape. This helps you decide what to focus on: you can explore historic spaces and botanical collections, or choose a route by its distance and stated duration. The difference is especially clear between the shorter walk near Saint-Paul des Fonts and the longer hike from Saint-Jean-d'Alcas to Sylvanès.

The fort and botanical heritage

The Fort of Saint-Jean-d'Alcas was built in the 15th century to protect the local population during the upheavals of the Hundred Years' War. This gives a visit a clear historical focus. On self-guided visits, you can explore the shelters in the north wall with a guidebook or audio guide and enjoy the view from the ramparts. Seasonal visiting arrangements may vary; check how visits are organized in advance.

In Saint-Paul des Fonts, the Espace botanique Hippolyte Coste presents the life and work of the canon. In 2022, the site received the “Maison d'Illustre” designation from France's Minister of Culture. The visitor route combines a botanical garden featuring the main plants of the Grands Causses flora with a small museum. Exhibits there include herbarium extracts, originals or facsimiles, and objects such as a plant press. The garden and museum offer different perspectives: one focuses on the region's plant life, the other on its collection and interpretation.

Two walks for different time budgets

The “Sur les pas de l'Abbé Coste” route starts and ends in Saint-Paul des Fonts. It is classified as easy, is 6.75 kilometres long and has a stated duration of 2 hours and 30 minutes. The path passes through woodland to a plateau, from which there are views of the natural Cirque de Saint-Paul-des-Fonts, the Annoux Valley and the Avant-Causses. Its distance and stated duration make it the shorter of the two walks described. As trail conditions can change, check the latest information before setting out.

The moderately difficult “De St-Jean-d'Alcas à Sylvanès” hike takes more time: it is 17.65 kilometres long and has a stated duration of five hours. It starts at the Fort of Saint-Jean-d'Alcas and ends in Sylvanès. Along the way, the route crosses the agropastoral plateau of Mascourbe, descends into the Sorgues Valley and then climbs a wooded mountain towards Sylvanès. The routes differ not only in length and duration, but also in their course: one takes in woodland, a plateau and viewpoints; the other links several landscape sections before reaching its destination. Check the latest route information before starting the longer hike.

Botanical discoveries at the cirque

Plants are also a focus around the village by the Cirque de Saint-Paul-des-Fonts, where botanical trails have been established. The cirque has remarkable floral diversity. Almost 1,000 species have been recorded in Canon Coste's herbaria, including some endemic to the Causses. This gives the botanical interest a distinct regional character: alongside diversity, it also encompasses species specific to the Causses. If you want to include the trails, garden and small museum in your stay, you can combine these different ways of exploring plant life with the history of the fort or one of the walks.
