Roquefort-Sur-Soulzon combines cheese culture with hiking trails that reveal a variety of landscapes. When planning your stay, you can decide whether to focus on tastings and local heritage or on hiking. The aging cellars, Le Saloir, and the trails each offer a distinct highlight.

Cheese Culture, Tastings, and Local Heritage

Caves Roquefort Société offers tours of aging cellars that are still in operation. Each visit ends with a tasting of three Société Roquefort cheeses. Maison Gabriel Coulet maintains a family cheesemaking tradition that has been passed down through five generations since 1869. A visit includes a free tasting of various Roquefort cheeses aged from four to 24 months, as well as sheep’s cheese. The tastings offer different points of comparison: at Société, the sample includes three varieties; at Gabriel Coulet, the aging period ranges from four to 24 months, and sheep’s cheese is also available.

Le Saloir is a municipal community space for acquiring and sharing knowledge about cheese culture and the tangible and intangible local heritage of Roquefort-Sur-Soulzon. Its scope therefore extends beyond tastings to include local knowledge and heritage preservation.

Hiking Trails and Landscapes

The Sentier du Menhir is a very easy 3.4-kilometer circular trail that takes about an hour and a half. These details help you estimate the time needed for the loop; check trail conditions before setting out. The Menhir du Soulzon is a stone more than three meters high, with two deeply engraved crosses. Its historical origins are disputed, with natural, prehistoric, and Christianized origins all proposed. The contrast between the stone’s tangible features and the open question of its origins also makes the menhir interesting from a cultural and historical perspective. The Sentier du Menhir lies in the core zone of the Causses and Cévennes Cultural Landscape of Mediterranean Agropastoralism. The term agropastoralism combines agriculture and livestock grazing, placing the loop within this culturally shaped landscape.

The Sentier des Échelles and the Sentier de Trompette each feature three panoramic highlights: the village of Roquefort, the Larzac, and the Tournemire basin. By contrast, the Sentier des Costes offers a view of the village on the slope of the Combalou rock and passes through an agropastoral landscape on the right bank of the Soulzon stream. Your choice may therefore depend on whether you prefer the shared viewpoints of the first two trails or the village and rock scenery of the Sentier des Costes.

Local History and Travel Planning

The 11th-century Saint-Pierre Chapel crowns the rock of the same name. Unlike the disputed origins of the menhir, it provides a clearly dated reference point in the area’s history.

Several free parking areas are available in the village. Roquefort en FĂŞte takes place every two years in June in Roquefort-Sur-Soulzon. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for the edition you wish to attend before making your plans.
