Rieupeyroux combines medieval architecture with trails through the Ségala landscape. At Saint-Martial Church, Romanesque remains meet defensive architecture; for circular routes, options range from a free, easy audio tour to longer hikes. Seasonal producers’ markets are another highlight.

Saint-Martial and the Medieval Townscape

Saint-Martial Church is classified as a French historic monument. It includes remains of the original Romanesque church, including several columns and capitals. The building also reflects its later defensive history: in 1356, at the start of the Hundred Years’ War, the church was fortified and incorporated into the town walls. A wall-walk and machicolations are also among its defensive features. The arcades of Place du Gitat also preserve elements of Rieupeyroux’s medieval urban fabric. Romanesque architectural features, the fortifications of 1356 and the arcades therefore come together in different ways. Those interested in architectural history can see these details as different ways of interpreting the townscape.

Comparing the Audio Trail and Hikes

The free, easy Oreilles en Balade audio trail takes about an hour and offers both an adult and a children’s version. Six listening stations, with independently accessible audio points and QR codes, structure the tour. If you plan to use the digital content, check access in advance if needed.

The equally easy De l’arbre bleu à l’arboretum circular trail is 5.24 kilometres long, takes about 1 hour 30 minutes and has 147 metres of elevation gain. The route crosses a small stream and passes through woodland and village landscapes alongside the lake; along the way, there is a view towards the church. The two routes therefore offer different time commitments: about an hour for the audio tour and around an hour and a half for the longer hike. Trail conditions can change with the seasons; check them before setting out.

The Sentier de l’aventure also passes through a wooded area and alongside an artificial lake, continuing here to the Chapel of Rieupeyroux. Le Bélier combines woodland scenery and views over the Ségala with architectural heritage between the chapel and the medieval town centre. The circular route can be reached via the D911 or D905 to Rieupeyroux town centre.

The Ségala, the Chapel and the Landscape

Rieupeyroux lies in the Ségala region, characterised by granite and schist landscapes. Open plateaus there are broken up by valley floors. The Chapelle Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Modulance stands on the 804-metre-high Mount Modulance and overlooks the region. Together with the woodland and lakeside sections described above, the trails offer a range of landscape features, while Le Bélier also takes in the architectural heritage between the chapel and the town centre.

Pony Rides and Horseback Riding

The Centre équestre du Haut Ségala offers pony rides and horseback rides in the Ségala, as well as introductory pony experiences for younger children. If you plan this activity, check the current booking and operating arrangements before travelling.

Producers’ Markets and Seasonal Travel Planning

The Marchés de producteurs de pays take place in Rieupeyroux every Sunday morning from mid-June to mid-September. The markets offer, among other things, aligot, cured meats, goat’s cheese, fouace, bread and gâteau à la broche; individual vendors may vary. As dates and times may change from year to year, check the specific market day before your trip. If a market visit is to be a highlight of your stay, a Sunday morning during the seasonal period is a good starting point for planning your trip.
