The ponds shape a visit to Privezac in two ways: they tell the story of the landscape’s long history of use and provide a focus for birdwatching and spending time outdoors. Depending on your interests, you can explore the history of the Étangs, choose a suitable season for birdwatching, or discover one of the options mentioned. There is also a municipal campsite offering relaxation, leisure activities and fishing.

Ponds with a long history

The Étangs du Ségala de Roussennac and de Privezac date from the 14th and 15th centuries. Centuries of use have shaped a remarkable ecosystem. The Étangs de Privezac are among five ponds designated as Natura 2000 sites. Here, the history of the ponds is intertwined with a landscape whose ecosystem is also significant.

The Plan d’eau de Privezac is another useful landmark: it covers five hectares and is surrounded by shady green spaces. If you are particularly interested in the pond landscape, you can make this spot, along with the Étangs, a focus of your stay.

Birdwatching in different seasons

You can observe resident and migratory birds at the Grand Étang de Privezac throughout the year. Winter and spring are particularly good times, with the spring migration making this a noteworthy season. This allows you to choose your travel dates according to your birdwatching interests: birdwatching is possible throughout the year, while winter and spring are especially recommended. Conditions for nature observation can vary from season to season.

There are several ways to explore the Natura 2000 ponds: on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. If you would like to include a specific route in your plans, the “Privezac – le plan d’eau” route is 8 km long. Check route conditions and trail markings before setting out, as they may change.

Getting there and where to stay

From Rodez, take the D 26 from the D 994 at Bel Air towards Privezac. The D 994 runs between Rodez and Villefranche-de-Rouergue. The ponds are on the D 48 and D 156; both roads can be reached from the town centre. As road conditions may change, it is a good idea to check them before travelling.

One option for staying in Privezac is the Camping municipal Les Malénies. Located by a body of water, it offers a family-friendly camping area open to everyone, with leisure, fishing and relaxation facilities. The Natura 2000 Étangs du Ségala and walking trails are nearby. This means you can consider your accommodation and your interest in ponds and trails together, without conflating the activities at the campsite with excursions in the surrounding area. Check availability and the facilities offered before travelling.
